Question about Muscle Milk/Powder drinks for weight gain?!

Question: I'm 14 and am thinking about taking some kind of Muscle Milk powder for weight gain. I was wondering is this a bad idea? Is there a certain product that is really good as well?

Muscle milk is over-priced and contains supplements and additives that I wouldn't recommend to a fourteen year old.

Opt instead for a 100% whey protein product. Good options include Optimum Nutritions 100% Whey Protein (chocolate is very good) or GNC's 100% whey. I've also heard favorable things about Body Fortress whey, which is fairly inexpensive.

Stay away from powders labeled "gainers." They are typically very high in sugars (maltodextrin and dextrose) and can contain up to 1200 calories per serving, which is calorie overkill unless you are on roids. Your body can only utilize a certain amount of calories at one time ... the remainder will be converted into fat. Consuming more than 500-700 calories in a single meal is not only inefficient, but one of the best ways to get fat along with your muscle.

As always, because of your age, check with your doctor before beginning protein supplementation. Whey is food, not an anabolic steroid, and it's considered safe for healthy adults with no kidney disease, but as a minor, you should consult your physician just to be safe.

Best of luck!

Rather than taking some unregulated health store supplement, I would look into one of the well known supplement drinks available to the general public. I would try something like Ensure if you are already eating a healthy diet rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals.
