Why don't Americans use Stone as a weight? Why only pounds?!

Question: Because we suck at multiplying by 14.

No, really, we do.

Answers: Because we suck at multiplying by 14.

No, really, we do.

they are using enough thumbs elbows and noses as it is now

How about using the metric system eh..

Grams and Kilograms ..

Come join civilization.

@mikeywills
LOL , it used to be different every 200 miles in every direction you went !! it didn't evolve to be slightly different everywhere.. it is evolving now , so it can be the same everywhere..
How about learning some history and common sense before arrogance.
The metric system is used in business everywhere , from Fiji to Iceland .. just not in grandma's cookbook.

i've often wondered that....
no idea what they mean when they say someone's 125 lbs.
and they use miles, so what's going on?

come on, yanks, explain yourselves!!

Now there's a frightening thought!!!

Why don't we use pounds instead of stone? lol I'm not sure.
Although, every time I get my wee calculater out to do the wee sum, 125lbs divided 14, etc :D
At least we know how many pounds are in a Stone, SOME Americans don't know how many pounds is one stone...

If we have pounds, why do we need stones? We don't use rods, roods, hands, or hectares much anymore either (except for horses).

Because stones take a longer time to add up as 1 stone is 14 pounds. If we were to start using stones we would have to change all of our scales.

That's not the end of it!

There are only 2,000lbs in the American ton.

A proper Imperial ton as recognised across the world, has 2,240lbs thus making it conveniently divisible by both two and three without having to resort to fractions.

Stone are easier to describe personal weights in the same way that feet-and-inches decribe personal heights. Which sounds best - 'six foot two' or 'one point eight eight metres'?

Why do we use pounds and ounces not kilos and grammes, why do we use miles when europe use kilometres.

I think the best answer is because we can, we have developed over many generations to be slightly different from each other. I think we should embrace these differences, they are what make us all unique, and why it is nice to go abroad on hols.

Because its easier to see a picture 10lb of butter or a KG of butter in our heads to compare.

How can you ask for a stone of butter and know what it looks like, a big stone? a litte stone? a bolder, half a mountain?

Its easier to visualise weights in LBs and KGs over stones!

Because they are too ignorant to join the rest of the world theu live in! A stone is pretty old skool theres 14lb's in a stone! But you lot have 2000lbs in a ton when there is 2240lbs in a metric ton?? you's lot just make it up as you go along??

I don't know.... that's just how we were all raised. We have the metric system here as well, and we all know it (or kind of know it) but we rarely ever use it. Pounds, feet, miles, etc. are just incredibly easier to me.

because stones are rocks, and we just like being different.

I prefer to weigh myself in stone, it seems lighter..smaller numbers and all that. I guess they Amercians don't like to divide by 14..who knows! They like to be different don't they, it's like they call bottom..'fanny' and stuff x

Yeah,...i find it annoying to!
