They say it's bad to starve yourself, but isn't that what gastric bypass!

Question: Also they say if you starve yourself you will actually gain weight. I know GB patients take vitamins for nutrition, but isn't it pretty unhealthy?

actually, no. I've actually had gastric bypass surgery in february of last year and I've lost almost 200 lbs. it does not make you starve yourself, it just makes your stomach smaller, therefore, when you eat you have to have smaller portions of food. But you have to eat every 2 hours, or you'll feel bloated.

it is..

They aren't starving themselves at all. They are eating what their stomach allows them to eat. If they were starving, then they wouldn't be eating at all.

Well, basically yes. And, one of the side affects, among many, are a slowing metabolism as the body goes into "starvation" mode.

This is a very drastic procedure for grossly overweight people done when their weight is likely to be more dangerous than the surgery. Much more complex than the lap band or stomach stapling procedure, and not done nearly as often.

No, gastric bypass patients have an oversized stomach which is decreased in surgery, but they usually still take in a normal amount of calories (less than what they were taking, but normal for the size they need to be & lose some weight), they just have to do so with several small meals a day. With obesity, the stomach stretches & allows overeating without the "full" feeling happening as fast. There is a better procedure that does remove any of the stomach, called The Lap band which is a band placed around the stomach to decrease its size, but it can be adjusted & have less complications. Gastric bypass can be managed properly with good/healthy results, but it takes a complete lifestyle change by the patient.
