My Amino Acid Intake?!

Question: Hey! I'm an 18 year old girl and I do a session of cardio first thing in the morning before breakfast, which I've heard is the best time for cardio. But I've been reading that you should intake amino acids before you work out in the morning so you don't burn muscle instead of fat. I don't like eating before I exercise, but what kind of foods contain amino acids? Or better, does it come in a supplement? And is there any limit on how much is healthy for a roughly 125 lb, active 18 year old girl to take daily?

Thank you!

Nonsense. You won't burn muscles. Protein and amino acids are bit players in energy production unless you're starving yourself to the point that your glycogen stores are chronically depleted.

Typically, you have enough glycogen (carb product) stored in your muscles and liver to power a pretty hard two hour workout.

If anything, you need a little carbohydrate fuel, depending on how you react to working out on an empty stomach. When I go for early morning runs, I'll chug a quart of water first, but don't bother eating anything unless I plan to go more than 8 miles.

there is a product called bragg. it tastes almost exactly like soy sauce and can be found in the supermarket as well as health food stores. you could just take it with a spoon if you don't want to eat before your workout.

here's some information from the manufacturer that should be useful to you.

What are Amino Acids?
Amino Acids are the building blocks of all our organs and tissues. They are also the building blocks from which different food proteins are constructed. When we eat a protein food, such as meat or soybeans, the natural hydrochloric acid in the stomach digests the protein, releasing the Amino Acids. They are the link between the food we eat and assimilation for our body tissue. Lack of adequate Amino Acids may make it impossible for the vitamins and minerals to perform their specific duties.

What is the difference between Bragg Liquid Aminos and regular Soy Sauce?
Bragg Liquid Aminos is a healthy alternative to Soy and Tamari sauce. No table salt or preservatives are added.

Are the soybeans used for Bragg Liquid Aminos genetically engineered?
Our Liquid Aminos is third party certified non-GMO. The GMO soybeans are produced by Monsanto and are sold under the brand name of Roundup Ready. These soybeans were altered to resist the herbicide glyphosate and have been available since 1995. Bragg Live Food Products buys its Liquid Aminos ingredients from a combine soy operation which, in turn, buys the soybeans from numerous sources in the central part of the United States. No soybeans produced from Roundup Ready seeds are purchased as part of this collective method, and are not used in Bragg products.

If there is no salt in the Liquid Aminos, where does the salty taste come from?
The salty taste comes from the soybeans that are used to make Bragg Liquid Aminos. There is no salt added of any kind (land or sea). The naturally occurring sodium from the soybeans is 100-115 mg. per 1/2 tsp. This is 1/10 the sodium content of table salt.

Is it OK for a person on a low-salt or sodium diet to use Liquid Aminos?
It is OK for an individual on a low-salt or sodium diet to have small amounts of the Liquid Aminos (just a few teaspoons) a day for seasoning. Bragg Liquid Aminos are not recommended for persons on no-salt or sodium diets.

Are Liquid Aminos Kosher certified?
Yes.

Should Bragg Liquid Aminos be refrigerated?
Bragg Liquid Aminos does not need to be refrigerated, either before or after opening/using, as it has a 3-5 year shelf life. However, we recommend that you keep the product out of direct sunlight, in a relatively cool location.

Where is the expiration date printed?
The Bragg Liquid Aminos expiration date is printed on the upper portion of the bottle, above the label, at the shoulder and neck taper area. Due to the dark color of the Liquid Aminos, the stamping can be difficult to find. We suggest tilting the bottle until the air bubble in the bottle is under the shoulder area, then slowly rotate the bottle until the expiration date stamping becomes visible, see photo below. The lower line of the 2 contains the expiration date. The upper line contains the 'lot' number for manufacturer reference and the time, in 24 hour format, that it was bottled. Bragg Liquid Aminos has a shelf life of 5 years; although due to its nature, Bragg Liquid Aminos can be safetely used for many years after expiration.
