Where do the rest of the calories go then?!

Question: You guys answered my question on calorie counters on bikes and treadmills. If an intense, mile-long run at a 7-minute pace only burns 140 calories, how do we possibly keep up with our average daily intake of 2,000 calories?

Just to maintain itself, the body burns about 50 cals/hr. That's 1200 a day. Any exercise at all, I'm talking brushing your teeth, increases the burn rate. Most of us are awake and moving about 16 hrs/day. Be easy to burn 800 more.

Your brain functions actually take up an amazing amount of your daily calorie intake. Things like standing at work, walking around a shop, or even just your heart circulating blood--these all burn calories. That's the point of taking in calories, so that our bodies can function.

The basal metabolic rate. Your body uses up a lot of fuel just for basic life functions.

your body can burn 1200 calories a day just staying alive. breathing, thinking, heart beating, all take calories. also digesting food takes calories.

you dont.. i mean you CAN. if you workout to lose weight, the point is to eat the same amount and then to burn off a good amount. but if you want to workout and maintain your weight, you have to eat a little bit more...and intake the same amount of calories you just burned off

You body uses a good deal of calories to perform its basic functions. Its fuel to keep you alive essentially. Unused calories are stored.

I think many of our calories are used in processes in our body, such as digestion, etc. also, you are doing more than just a run per day. everything takes calories. its just a unit of measure. even typing on the computer took some kind of calorie release. We also need to store calories for bodyily functions. I dont know if Im right in this, but thats what I have gathered. some nurse ill make one day ahha, but i still have a year and a half to go
