Question: and exercising 5x a week? 30 minutes of cardio and dance classes 3 times a week?

oh yes definitely!
cardio workouts help so much!!

Well sure, and pretty fast too!

Yes

add a box of laxatives and purge 2 time a day and you should be fine

Most likely, but not in a good way!!! Here's what will happen:
Your body will go into starvation mode, and virtually EVERY single calorie you eat will get stored as fat.

Here's a better idea (I lost 12lbs in 2 weeks, and am down a total of 30 or so without working out at all!):

1. Take your total amount of calories you need for a healthy lifestyle.
2. Divide that up into about 6 - 8 meals throughout the day
3. Don't cut out the foods you like!
4. Eat on a set schedule

I eat like this:
1. A healthy breakfast
2. 3 hours later I eat a snack (granola bar, applesauce, etc)
3. 3 hours later eat a light lunch
4. 3 hours later eat another light snack
5. 3 hours later eat dinner (usually chicken and veggies - not much bread or pasta. That's lunch)
6. 3 hours later eat another light snack

And drink TONS of water!

What this does is it puts your body on a schedule. Your body is a very efficient machine. If you eat at the same times every day, and eat every 3 hours your body will become VERY good at burning calories. It keeps your metabolism humming like a finely tuned motor! You'll see the pounds melt away in no time.

If you are starving yourself AND working out, your metabolism slows down so much it's impossible for you to lose weight (after an initial weight loss). You'll store every calorie you eat because your body won't know when its next meal is coming.

You should never be REALLY hungry. Eating on a schedule you'll get hungry right about when it's time to eat. It works great!

We don't know what your age or weight is, so we can't tell the approximate number of calories you are burning, daily.

If you're a young adult, of average weight and fitness, chances are good that this plan is burning more calories than you're consuming.

Don't decrease the amount you eat! You are right about at the line that separates "low-calorie" from "starvation". If you choose to eat even less, and your body begins to think you're starving it, your weight loss can slow, then stop, then reverse, depending on how much you eat, afterward.
