Should I eat after a workout?!

Question: I work out at 6pm usually until 8 so about two hours and I dont eat because I think it defeats the whole purpose of the calories I burned. So I guess I'm asking is it safe not to eat after a work out? Usually I do about an hour of cardio, light weights and stretches.

Here's something interesting for you... Not only should you be eating after your workout but also before and durring your workout!

I know that you think that I'm crazy, but hear me out. In order for your body to burn fat it needs energy, the body can only burn carbs at a high intensity (ie durring exercise) so you need to eat some Low GI (long lasting carbs) before exercise (about an hour) to ensure that you are able to burn fat. Now here's something interesting, the body can only store enough energy to work at a high intensity for around an hour, so if you workout longer than that you need to consume some high GI (fast absorbed energy, lots of sugar) to replace the energy that you have burned or you will not be able to work as hard. Also your body will then conserve what fat it has left as it may need it later and also it can not easily convert the fat to energy without the carbs so it goes into a catobolic state which means you begin to burn muscle instead of fat as it is easier for the body to break this tissue down durring exercise and if you do weights after your hour of cardio that means you are making yourself weak before you lift which means there isn't much point lifting and if you do cardio after your weights then you are going to eat away the gains you've just made.

So what is the answer? You need to consume around 1 gram of sugary carbs per kilo of bodyweight (yes you get to eat lollies of you want... Sports drinks, jelly beans ect) for every hour of exercise that you do. This will help you work harder and longer and burn more fat which is the goal of your training.

No as to after your training, you should eat some more high sugar carb, if it's been a full 2 hours then repeat the above mentioned carb intake wihin 15 minutes of finishing (I know it seems lilke a lot and is contrary to what everyone makes you believe but trust me this is science) also because you've lifted weights you need to eat some protein within 45 minutes of finishing your workout, a can of tune is perfect but if you prefer you can buy a protein drink (if you do check how many carbs are in it and take this away from your jelly bean intake) You are eating the sugar again now to get the glucose back into your muscles to prevent the catabolic state from occurring (your muscles being eaten) it is so important to preserve every micro pound of muscle that you can as just 1 pound of muscle burns 30cal per day durring inactivity and even more durring exercise!

To finish off within 2 hours you should resume your normal eating habbits and have a normal meal, ie lunch, dinner, afternoon tea whatever time it is... You will be hungry, believe me you will be surprised... By following this you maximise your fat burning and muscle building potential and will make the maximal results in the minimum of time!

Remember you should always train hard... AND MORE IMPORTANTLY ALWAYS TRAIN SMART!

The best thing to do is have a protien bar with a protien shake=)

I work out everyday from 3:30 to 5:00 and it works for me!

Hope i Helped Bye!

I'm sure its fine to eat after a work out as long as its not a lot. Aerobic and cardio exercise keeps your metabolism up 50% for up to 4 hours or more after working out.

A light snack like yogurt or crackers is fine.It is like a little reward to your body for all the hard work.Enjoy!

its okay to eat after your workout because your body is still burning calories for a hour or so after you get done. just don't eat foolishly.

It is perfectly safe not to eat after a workout. As long as you have a healthy diet and get the calories + nutrients you need, it doesn't matter a bit when you eat them. Over the long term -- days or weeks, say -- you'll be getting proper nutrition and exercise. What happens in the short term -- a matter of hours, say -- doesn't really matter at all.

Hey pink i hope this helps. You should definitely eat after a workout. Your metabolism is very high after a work out and you should consume anywhere from 300-500 calories after a work out. Plus your body needs the protein and carbs to replenish themselves so feed your muscles. If you don't eat right after a workout your body will feed off of your muscles and in this state you will lose weight but still look fat! Keep up the good work because i work out around the same time as you i do cardio, light weights and stretches and so far i've lost 9lbs in 1 1/2 months!
