Is my friend anorexic or bulimic?!


Question: My friend is very fat and she told me she would start a diet, and her diet is mostly veggies and fruits but she says she wants to keep her calories under 500 a day. Two days ago we ate some cucumber together and she excused herself from the table to go to the restroom where I heard her vomiting. Then I asked her why was she doing that, and she told me because she wants to lose weight and I told her that she was only consuming 500 calories a day if not less and how can her body could get sick etc....

aShe is anorexic. Most people don't know this, but most anorexics throw-up as well. Mostly when they are forced to eat. Anorexics also loose the sense of what "normal" is. You should try to talk to your friend. The way you described the situation, it looks like it's still in early stages, so there's a good chance she will get better. She could read some books about anorexia, there are a lot of good books. Personnally I would recommend "Wasted" by Maria Hornbacher, it's kindda hard-core but it's a great book and it's very honest and it shows how unglamourous eating-disorders really are. I hope your friend is gonna eat normal again soon!

Bulimic - I would suggest getting her some help.

sounds like she is a little of both, You need to Tell her She needs a more calories than 500 a day.. Just the right ones.. She needs to quit throwing up. She could damage something.. She needs excises be a friend do it with her never judge her. Do ever compare your self to her... Try the diet with her, I'm not saying your fat , For example if your a smoker you don't want to be around smokers because that would make you want a cigarette.. If your around bad foods you will want to eat it.. Be her friend......

Bulimic- and she wont lose weight by doing this. It will set her metabolism into starvation mode and it will very slowly take her vitamins, then muscle, and then fat off of her. It will probably take her about two years of doing this to make any progress, but by then she will have brown teeth very thin hair and be vitamin defficient and then NO ONE will like her no matter how skinny she is.. She seriously needs to know this and get help if she has been doing this for a while or is dead set on this.

Probably your friend is not bulimic, she is doing that, because she does not know how to cope with being fat. I would suggest talking to her and explaining, that making herself sick will not help her at all, as she will be still hungry and unhappy and will gain weight straight after loosing it. She needs to start exercising and eating healthily.
She need to eat plenty of veg, fruit (not bananas or grapes, as they have too much sugar), chicken, fish. Explain to her that the best way to cook her food would be steaming. I am not overweight, but I mainly steam my food, because it is easy to do and also you keep most of the vitamins in the food.
No crisps, cookies, sugary, fizzy, alcohol stuff.
Just veg (no potato), fruit, steamed chicken or fish, sea food, drink plenty of mineral still water, diary products (low fat) and plenty of having fun, danceing, exsercising....I am sure she will start loosing weight, BUT remind her that it will not happen overnight it needs to become her life style.... But when it happens, she will feel and look great. Starving does not leave to succes it leads to disaster.

500 calories a day is next to nothing.
She should be starting to drop to around 2000 calories a day to start with. Once she is used to that go to 1750 and then 1500. After that then drop to 1250, then 1000. Stick to each drop for at the very least one week.
If you drop calorie intake too quickly, it will freak out your metabolism, and your body will hold on to as much fat as possible.
People who are bulimic are generally fatter than people on no diet/exercise at all. Your body can extract calories pretty quick from food in your stomach if need be, and once you get into the routine of vomiting, your body will catch on pretty quick and prepare itself for starvation.
On a side note, people who are bulimic often get really ugly too, the constant strain on the body of vomiting causes all kinds of cosmetic problems. Not to mention severe health issues.
