the number of calories you need to consume everyday depends on how much you want to workout, and basically how much energy you use everyday, even just walking around and breathing. The Nutrition facts on the back of many food items are based on a 2,000 calorie diet, but for some people this is too much, and for some people this is too much.

One of my friends used to consume 2,000 calories per day, but he worked out all the time and spent most of his time working out. He went to the doctor and was told he should have been eating 5,000 calories per day.

My advice to you is to do whatever you can to eat healthy and consume lean protein, like fish, chicken, eggs. This gives you protein without the fat. Beef has a lot of protein but also a lot of fat. But also, dont leave out other food groups, eat vegetables, bread, cheese. be careful how much of them you eat, but they each give your body something important. Make smart choices, instead of beef, get chicken. instead of Coke, drink water, or juice.

Also, If you are thinking about starting to work out, try to stay away from weights for a few years. At your age, your muscles are still developing, and you really need to be careful. So as an alternative, go running, do pushups, and other exercises where your body is the weight that you are lifting. Doing those things will help you lose weight, and build muscles without risking permanent damage to your muscles.

One final note, when you do start using weights, (1) start light, and (2) using weights is dangerous, and you should try to bring a buddy along when you workout. In any workout, buddies help you keep going when you get tired, and can help make weights less dangerous.

Good Luck!!! From one guy to another, Go get 'em.

about 2000 to stay same fit and healthy

It depends on your weight and height. At your age are you over weight? You should have high motabolism and not have to watch too closely. Your still growing, you dont want to cut off any nutrients.

If your activity level increases significantly you will need more than 2000 cal./day. Eat until your hunger is satisfied, then quit. Each time you feel hunger eat a little bit.

If you start to work out, you need to eat more calories!! ideally everyone should eat around the same amount of calories you will burn off in a day through just living, and the amnount of exercise you do.
Don't count calories though, its pointless.
Just eat healthily and you'll be ok!

Don't worry about calories, worry about what you're eating.

2000 cals/day is the FDA recommended number, but if you eat 2000 cals of sugar a day, you'll be ten times less healthy than someone who eats 2500 cals/day of whole grains, lean protein and leafy greens.

PS: What kind of workouts are you talking here? If its running, biking or any other cardio, good for you go for it! If it's weights or weight machines, don't do it. You're 12 and haven't grown into your full adult body yet, you could seriously injure yourself trying to push weights at your age.

Yeah do not push weights yet, the ends of your bones are still growing. 1000-2000 is just fine, but you have to really be eating a lot of vegetables, fruits, rolled grains, lean turkey, avoid anything with corn syrup, fructose syrup like the plague, drink milk, whole berry juice.
