So I was watching the Biggest Loser last night?!

Question: Bob and Jillian were putting the team through their paces and one guy was exercising to the point where he threw up ! What is the physiological reason for this happening ? I realise that it was broadcast because it probably made for good TV (??) but what possible benefit could it have for the person who was doing the exercise?

I'm pretty disappointed shows like this are so popular. I suppose it makes good television to see such dramatic results or see people who miserably go through the paces. Losing more than a couple pounds in a week is not healthy weight loss, most of it's water, a lot of it will be lean muscle and only some of it will actually be bodyfat. Bodyfat is released roughly at a maximum rate of a couple pounds a week, so losing 5 or 10 pounds in a week is very suspect.

A person would vomit from this when the intensity of exercise exceeds their capabilities, causing the body to reject whatever's in the digestive tract as it tries to deal with the high stresses being put on it, rapid release of toxins building up in the muscles, trying to rush oxygen and nutrients and not being able to handle digestion at the same time. Exercise and nutrition are healthy when approached as a lifestyle change rather than some stunt done on TV. Whenever the goal of a TV show is how much scale weight is lost, the more the better, it's bunk.
