Basic, healthy diet?!

Question: I live and work in NYC, and am also a full time student- so basically I have about five bucks a day to spend on food. The difficulty is that the "work" part of the equation includes being a Pilates trainer, so I have to have a balanced diet to keep my energy (and nutrition) up. I'm also a vegetarian.

Any very basic diets out there that would fulfill this?

I've never been on a diet, but the diet concept that made the most sense to me is called the Paleolithic Diet. The idea is that we are really just cavemen in an evolutionary sense and we should eat a diet that our bodies have evolved to accommodate. This essentially means you don't eat any processed food, not even bread. You just stick to whole foods, or foods that were accessible to cavemen. In reality, I think you could modify it and have an exception or two, such as bread and milk and still get good results.

I think you could do this for $5 a day if you buy friuts and vegetables that are in season or on sale.

You need protein and complex carbs.

Bananas, lentils, ....attached is a dietician link that may be able to give you some suggestions on your needed caloric intake.
