First lets deal with the shin splints:
Ice your shins and refrain from running for a week or so. Try to keep you legs elevated to alleviate the pressure and get blood circulating again and give your shins a good rub down for fifteen minutes with some Hot/Ice menthol solution.

Now, what's the condition of your sneakers?? And what type of surface are you running on?
Dip into your savings and get yourself a new pair of shock absorbing/ daily use running sneakers (my favorite are Mizuno). Treadmill running is the worst as well as asphalt. Go to your local running track if available or run on cement (it absorbs the shock better). Avoid running on sand or grass as the uneven surface will place your hips out and strain your knees.

As far as weight loss- all depends on your age, how much you currently weigh and how many calories you consume daily. The average calories burned while running is 100 calories in ten minutes at a 12 minute pace (5 mph).

Happy running!

You need a really good pair of running shoes with maximum shock absorbancy.

the problem is because
1)it might be your legs are not strong enough to support your weight
2) your shins are not used to the hard surface.

You should:

Do some squats.

Do short_term intervals running

Do some shin stretches.

Make sure you have good running shoes. Many new runners don't realize that shoes are extremely important. You should go to a specialty shoe store where they know what they're doing. The employees should ask you to walk so that they can see how your feet move and determine if you need adjustments or different shoes. And the shoes MUST be the right size.

Also, don't push yourself too hard too fast. Your body needs time to acclimate to a regular running schedule. If you have bad shoes and run too much too fast, you'll likely injure yourself.

Good luck.

its actually better to fast pace walk then run, its better for your knees and shins and you can go for longer distances without getting as tired
and you could probably loose about 8-10 pounds with excersize

I've been the same re: shin splints. And they kill! All you have to do is just take it a little easier, and build up. Depending on what stage you're at too, you can walk a little, jog then walk again, with bits of sprinting too, that way you can increase your cardiovascular fitness too.

Re: weight loss, it really depends how 'overweight' you are, if you are at all. For someone larger, it's usually easier to lose more weight at the beginning of the weight loss journey, than if you're say only 10kgs too heavy. Losing weight is still hard tho.

Don't limit your carbs too drastically, still have some in the morning, and for lunch, your body does need carbs for energy!

Just a guess, but if you really put your mind to it, in 8 weeks I'd say 10kgs. That's like a kilo per week, plus a bit more, as you're starting out, but hard to say for sure. Even 5 kgs tho, would feel amazing! Just keep going!

Remember that weight is'nt the only thing to measure your success by, it's measurements, muscle tone, and how you feel! Even skin clearer and eyes more sparkly! :P Good luck!
