DO Crunches and Sit-Ups Cause People to Bulk or Slim?!

Question: Thanks!

Answers: Thanks!

Crunches and sit-ups do not make you do either...eating more calories than you burn makes you "bulk up" and eating less calories than you burn makes you "slim down." Exercise alone does neither. You can tone up the muscle or give it some shape, but losing or gaining weight (muscle or fat) is strictly based on what you eat. I was a personal trainer for a couple years and whenever a woman would come ask me about her "problem" area (tummy, butt, triceps, etc.) and they would want to know the best machine to lose weight there, I would tell them the treadmill. Because cardio and diet are the main components that contribute to weight loss. Doing crunches will help to burn a few extra calories, so they're great for that. But for losing and/or gaining weight anywhere...diet and cardio. Good luck!

like any other exercise, it burns fat and tones you up!

Usually slim down. Be careful with Sit ups-- they can hurt your back, and Crunches are just as effective. But pilates is the best thing for abs, and it definitely makes you leaner (and longer! :D

they work on your abs there not neccesarliy gonna make you bulk up and they arent gonna neccesarily gonna make you slim down

stretching before, in the middle, and after exercises will help prevent muscles from bulking up

Got it!!! It depends on whether or not you're using weights with the crunches and sit-ups. If you are looking for slimming down, then crunches and sit-ups alone won't do it. They will only tone the muscles and you will have great abs under flab. If you're looking to bulk up you need to incorporate weight into your ab routine. If slimming is for you, do the ab workouts and add in cardio to trim the excess so everyone can see your great abs.

bulk up!

Crunches and sit ups will make your abs strong and burn a lot of fat. Unless you do a whole lot of them you won't bulk up, but you will slim down and loose excess fat.

crunches and sit-ups will cause your stomach to bulk up if not combined with cardiovascular exercise. Ab work makes your stomach toned while exercise burns fat...u need both elements

neither. you build ab muscles. but if you don't lose the fat then it doesn't matter.

Like any other muscle. Overwork it and it will grow. I suggest doing abs once or twice a week and moderately. Don't use weights on abs. You want them to look small and your other muscles big or more defined(unless you want BIG ABS). I THINK GIRLS LOOK GREAT WITH A SMALL MID SECTION and everything else nice and toned.

burns fat and adds muscle. So it slims and tones but becomes a harder midsection instead of soft fat.

Crunches will definately tone you up, but they don't do much to work your lower abs. Flutter kicks and scissor kicks are great for keeping those toned and flat. There are so many variations on crunches, too. Knees at 90 degree angle, feet straight up, switching elbows to knees, etc. I swear by crunces to keep toned and slim down. Plus, you can do more reps.

Sit ups are better for endurance and building your muscles up, but they usually cause you to bulk up a little bit. At least they did for me. (Trust me, i did hundreds of them at Basic Training. Although I did slim down a bit, because I was a little chubby to begin with, I noticed a difference when I left basic and got to AIT, where I do way more crunches and my stomach has since flattened.)

If you're already average weight and just want to shrink a little belly fat and over-all increase muscle definition, I would go for a combination or cardio, variations of crunches and exercises for lower abs

God, I sound like a know-it-all. Ha ha.

It depends, it could be both. By doing simple variations, such as more reps for tone/definition or adding a weight on your chest when you do abs could add additional mass/muscles to it.
So it can be both, but the choices are yours.

SLIM UP, most definitely.

Do me a favor and answer this please:

i do about 300 crunches a night, and it keeps u very toned and cut...

It tightens up your stomach muscles and helps you lose the calories too.
