Why isn't my dad losing weight despite drastic lifestyle changes?!

Question: My dad is obese, he weighs around 200 and is only 5'4" or so. In January he joined Weight Watchers on the advice of his doctor and has been staying well within his daily caloric intake and exercising for at least 35 minutes a day on the treadmill and weights a couple times a week. He's distressed because he's not losing weight. Any reason why this might be?? I'm really afraid that he's going to give up his diet and start eating crap again which is not at all cool because he has heart problems...

It will take a few months at least. He is probably losing bodyfat and gaining muscle, which often will even cause bodyweight to go up at first before tapering off and heading downward. The muscle is good though- it increases his metabolism enabling him to burn more fat... Things are happening he just needs to be patient to see the weight start heading downward.

Is he following the program and writing down everything. If he is he need to take his food journal to the WW director. They will look over it and give him some advice.

y not ask the doctor who advised him this path ?

look up 'hypothyroidism' on the internet
and get his blood tested for TSH, T4 and T3 :)

That's the first medical step to take for the symptoms provided

If he is doing serious strength training then he needs to know that fat weighs less than muscle. You can lose fat and still gain weight if you are building muscle.

It sounds like he needs to see a doctor for some blood work. There could be a medical reason for him not losing weight. I would have the thyroid checked just to make sure.

Tell him to read this book: Seven Secrets of Slim People. The more calorie counting you do and the more horrible food you have to eat, the more stressful the program will be and it will affect his metabolism. Just tell him to read that book. Everything is in bullet points and it takes a couple hours to go through the whole thing. It really helped me and I threw away all my dieting books and food after that and lost weight with a smile.

I think your dad should convince himself that he can loose weight and not to be distressed.

He only need to eat the correct food, and to avoid the high-calories' products

let him focus on the fruit and vegetables, and to play cardio exercises, it is good to go to sauna 2 times a week.

From your side, you should support him by encourging him to walk and to change his spirit to become optimistic

Wish you the best of luck, you and your dad

secretly eating at the truck stop buffet?

Tell him to be sure he is using all his points if he is using the Flex plan; if he is on the Core plan, have him switch to Flex and vise-versa. And by all means, tell him to use all his points. Sometimes peopl don't use all their points. Make sure the points are good choice points not empty calorie points. Tell him we are all pulling for him!

Many obese people cannot lose weight on diets and may actually gain weight if calories are cut. For example, when I was pregnant with my daughter, I was in the hospital the last 6 weeks on a 1000 calorie a day diet; every bite in was monitored and counted. Yet, I still gained 2-3 lbs per day due to underlying medical conditions.

Sometimes medications also can prohibit weight loss.

At 200', 5'4", your father's BMI would be in the lower end of the obese range, depending onhow muscular he is. (Morbid obesity is => 40.

For me, diet and exercise never worked and only helped me to balloon up. I had to go to bariatric surgery which changed my life. However, your father is probably below the range for consideration, based on both BMI and pounds overweight.

All you really need to lose weight is exercise. But the heart problems means he needs to eat healthy food. In other words, I'm suggesting your dad isn't exercising right. Increase the speed on the treadmill so that when he finishes, he's sweating a good amount. Also tell him to eat more vegetables, fruits, and meat only once or twice a week.

It takes time. He hasn't been at it that long. Patience.

hi, if your father is too anxious he is not going to lose the weight, maybe he should give it a couple of weeks before he weigh, anyway here is something simple your dad can do, if he do these things not only will it take care of his weight but it will take care of his heart problem too. he should have a colon cleanse done by a natural care doctor. he can take some organic unrefined vergin coconut oil. he can also take some apple cider vinegar before each meal, that will stop him from gaining the weight, the oil and the colon cleanse will help him lose the extra weight and the will get a lot of energy and better health from the colonic. go to www.naturalcures.com to find a good natural care phisician. you can get the oil at any health food store. you can also get colon care things at the health food store if you dont have the money to go to a professional

well, if his muscle tone is becoming more noticeable and stronger, then he is getting results... it sounds to me he is doing enough cardio to burn fat...

maybe get him to eat more protein and eat a bit less carbs as well.

but he will get results... its coming

I would suggest trying cleansing your body. I found cleansing to be the best weight loss program. I have ever tried. I lost 12 pounds in a week and 29 pounds in a month. I feel better since I removed the toxins from my body and shed some unwanted pounds. I did weight watchers, Jenny Craig and Medifast. I found that cleansing was the best since I saw results quickly and that kept me motivated to stick on the program.
