As someone who is studying to become a clinical psychologist, specializing in eating disorders, I would say that its obviously more than one thing. Among the leading causes: some women are deeply impacted by a single negative comment, others have poor body image, some seek attention, and some do it to feel in control.
There is also an underground community "pro-Ana" it teaches one how to become a better anorexic or better bulimic. These pro Ana mia site promote the idea that "Bones are beautiful"

I think what you are describing in the question is more of the pro-Ana person, choosing to be thin, not battling the disorder. Many women are unaware of the consequences of their disordered eating habits, and think that its not a big deal. Many anorectics have the "it will never happen to me" mind set, figuring they will never be a statistic. Sometimes being thin is more important that being healthy.
Many people are uneducated about eating disorders and how truly detrimental it is to ones health. So all in all, I guess what I am getting at is that media causes poor body image, one comment can change a persons life, attention seeking can ruin ones life and needing control can end ones life.

MEDIA!!! Media has perceived women as skinny!! Look at BArbie, she is perfect, skinny, blond no flaws, that is how women/girls want to look.... it is a terrible thing

society's pressure to be thin.
the fucked up ideal beauty.
emulating skinny celebrities.
no self worth.
the list goes on.

Because thin is beautiful nowadays.

Mostly because they want to seem as attractive as female celebrities, who famously have tiny waists

Being called too thin is better than being called fat.

because that is what society intimates is cool and pretty and acceptable, unfortunately it is also wrong. Beautiful is healthy inside inside and when you are healthy inside you are beautiful outside.

Anyone who says media is correct. Society and the people around us tell young girls that to look pretty and beautiful they must be sickeningly thin. That way when they grow up they can go into porn without having to lose weight or worry about selling her confidence and pride.

because unfortunately women are placed into this trend by society. women no longer see themselves as beautiful unless they are wearing a size 2 with big breasts. it's sad, because not only is it unhealthy, but it's starting out in girls now. disorders like anorexia and bulimia are our own fault in this country, because we are allowing the media and young hollywood set our examples.

I think so many girl are this way for a few reasons. One, the media almost every girl in the media is super skinny. If thats what our kids are watching and seeing everyday. Thats going to be a huge impact on how they think they need to look. Also i think an other big factor in this is BOYS. How many boys expecially in the 15-25 years olds go after a girl with a little meat on them...(not that, that is a bad thing). As a 23 year old who has been a little over wieght her whole life. I know how it feels to be talked about, and even turned down from a date b/c the guy didnt think i was skinny enough, and if he go out with me he would be made fun of. I am a huge supporter in the new Dove campaign i think what they are doing will soon make an impact all girl and women!
