Is there a way for me to stay more awake and alert during class?!

Question: I have lots of trouble staying alert (and sometimes awake!) during my first period Geometry class. I always put my head down on my desk the minute after notes and I just get all drowsy and sleepy. I wake up at 6:15 every day for school. I try and eat breakfast every day some days I just don't have time. I go to bed around 10:30 to 11 and get probably 7 hours of sleep a night. On weekends I get a bit more, around 9 or 10. Any answers to my problem?

omg no wayy! last year i had trouble staying awake in MY first period geo class! (And I woke up at 5:30 lol)

First; go to bed NO LATER than 10. If you have trouble getting all you're homework done by 10, start it sooner or if you have sports or something keeping you from doing hw early just stay up until 10:30 and no later.

Secondly; wake up at 6:00. It doesn't make a big difference and it gives you time to make breakfast. (Or you could prepare breakfast the night before and heat it up in the morning.)

Thirdly; Eat a breakfast that will fill you up, but doesn't have a lot of sugar or fat because it will make you tired. I like cooking oatmeal with skim milk instead of water, putting splenda in it, and topping with raising or other dried fruit. And eat a banana on the side. OR you could have a high fiber, low sugar cereal like Cheerios with skim milk and eat some fruit or toast or egg whites with cheese (the egg whites and cheese is the best b/c it gives you protein)

Finally, don't eat late during the night. studies have shown that if you eat late at night it will make you groggier the next morning similar to a hangover (of sugar lol)

This worked for me even though geometry is the most boring subject ever! This year i have spanish first and it isn't much better than geometry haha. If you just eat a filling breakfast (oh yeah and a multivitamin) then you should be fine =]

Eat an apple in the morning. An apple has more power to wake you up than a cup of coffee. Plus the apple is easy to eat and good for you!

Adding exercise helps you sleep better at night and can increase your energy!

You could have a sleep disorder like sleep apnea.

This is where you stop breathing and it will wake you up and break up your sleep cycle. Most people, my self included, do not know we are waking up. What happens is you get like 7-10 hours of down time, but not more than 1-2 hours at a time. This keeps you out of REM and that is what makes us better (recoup) when we sleep.

Also, try going to bed 1 hour earlier.

You can be tested for sleep disorders. Mention it to your doctor next visit.

Good luck!

The sleeping isn't an issue here.

Try to become more involved in the class and develop your interest. Focusing on the subject matter will make you stay alert and not so sleepy.

i go to bed at midnight during school nights, and get up at 6.15.

i have the same problem as you, except i overcome it by fantasizing about hot male teachers or men in general.

trust me, it keeps a girl awake!

sit straight. open your eyes. we have similar problems. im failing geometry coz of that.

NoDoz!! I'm in college and i use it all the time. If it wasn't for them i wouldn't have gotten into nursing school.

NoDoz = caffeine pills

As a university professor, I see this problem all of the time. The worst classes are the first in the day (8 am for me) and right after lunch. People have lots of trouble staying awake in those classes.
Caffeine is probably the best answer. Personally, I don't drink coffee during the day, but if I am attending an early morning lecture or a post-prandial one, I take the precaution of having a can of Coke just before. This will keep me awake quite nicely.
Coffee has more caffeine per cup, but too many people drink coffee all day and so they become used to it and it does not have as good an effect.
Another pointer is to not put your head down on your desk. That is an invitation to sleep and I can be asleep within a minute if I do that.
Good luck with your studies, there is not much more valuable than a good education.
