Question about wight versus appearance?!

Question: People are always shocked to find out what I really weigh. They always think its less than it is. (Which is nice!)

I weight about 280 (6' 2"), but everyone always says I look 250. When I weighed about 260, everyone thought it was like 210 or less.

I "carry my weight well".

But even when I was 260, and people called me "skinny", technically I was obese. Hows the hell does that work? Isn't there some footnote to the formula for people who "carry their weight well"?

The BMI formula (and weight charts) is inherently flawed because it does not account for muscle mass in any way. If you were a professional body builder at 280 lbs/6'2", your BMI would show that you are obese. Obviously, professional body builders are not obese.

Usually people that carry their weight well, as you described, either have a greater amount of muscle or know how to dress.

You must have more lean mass (muscle weight) than you do fat, which will give you a leaner appearance. Muscle weighs more than fat, so the number on the scale will be larger than expected. If you went by the bmi calculator to come to the conclusion that you are technically obese, those calculators do not add in the factors of more muscle or fat.

depends on skeletal structure and muscle mass.
