Cutting out the junk is a good way to start, but it's only part of the solution.

You need to eat healthier, not necessarily less. Also these fad diets like your Mother's grapefruit diet don't work in the long run. She'll wind up regaining the weight later.

The key here is you need to lose it slowly. Your BMR is 1724 and if you're moderately active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week) then your total calorie needs for the day is 2672. That's a lot so you have a lot to work with there. I'd say to cut your calorie needs by 500-800 calories a day to bring it to between 1800-2100. Please do not go below 1800.

Now in cutting this many calories a day, you're now losing between 3500-5600 calories a week plus the physical activity you're doing in gym. I would suggest that if you're not in gym at the moment, to do some cardio every day. It can't hurt.

3500 calories burned equals one pound of fat. If you stick with this programme, you can safely lose about 2 pounds a week which is the optimal amount to lose. Too much more than this and you run the risk of it coming back.

Good luck.
