Should I use a personal trainer?!

Question: A personal trainer at the gym gave me an estimate of $50 per 50 minute session. He wants to works with me for 3 months. I can't imagine having someone stand over me 3 months twice a week, no matter how cute the guy is!

Is this a good price and should I do it. I am 8 percentage points too fat (body fat index) and I am 5'3" and weigh 150 lbs.

It depends on your level of commitment. I say if you are really self-motivated than there is no need to use a personal trainer, unless you are training for something specific. If you are just looking to get toned, than there are plenty of resources out there to help you out, books, websites, online groups etc. I worked with a personal trainer for a few months who wasn't very good. In the end, I canceled my contract and I have lost more weight and look a lot better now that I am working out by myself. The key is getting to the gym EVERY DAY and sweating consistently. It won't work any other way. Also, instead of wasting money on a trainer, invest in a heart rate monitor and try and reach your target heart rate every time you do cardio. It makes a huge difference. I recommend a couple of books. Jillian Michaels has a great book that will get kick your butt called "Making the Cut". Another trainer, Gunnar Peterson has a great book called "The Workout" that is pretty basic. It just takes getting into the gym every day. That is key.

I live in NYC & $50/session is a very good & reasonable rate.
It will keep up your motivation & you won't injure yourself.

Good luck.
