Why don't people do this anymore?!

Question: cook their own meals?
it's cheaper, healthier, and puts more control into your hands.

and no "not enough time" excuses.

honestly i think society has changed to a much faster pace and people just try to get things done as quick as possible.
for example, why go to the library when you can just go online and get book excerpts at home?

i think it's the same thing in homes... why bother doing the prep work for cooking, have to serve it all out, and then clean up when you're done?

by eating out people get prepared food, served, and cleaned up after.

i think it's just laziness really.
i'm not one to eat out all the time or even get fast food because of those reasons you stated, it's cheaper, healthier and puts more control into your hands.
i would rather know who touched what where and be SURE that it was cleaned properly or washed... know where it came from and know the chef.
not to say that chefs at restaurants will do bad things to food but things happen sometimes... hair... sneezes... lick a finger or spoon a taste and then use that same spoon again accidentally... i mean that stuff is okay at home cooking for yourself but who is to say that it doesn't go on behind those closed doors when you're eating out??

your local Department of Public Health website (government site) shows restaurant ratings that tell you how clean the facilities are... how safe the food is stored and prepped, how clean the cooking areas are, how clean the restrooms are, if there's any evidence of rodent or insect infestations... it is free to search and you can search by zip code or by restaurant or facility name.

apparently the sf bay area has a different program now called cleanscores. same thing. http://www.sfdph.org/dph/comupg/oProgram... which leads you to the clean scores website: (http://www.cleanscores.com)

almost every place i looked up has some kind of issues. it was quite eye opening.
i think if people realized what goes on in public places they would eat at home more...

save your money and your health ya kno??

anyway i think it's a dam shame though. i don't think it matters how transfat free this and that there is and weight watchers here and there and sign up now and pay this much money to lose this many pounds!!, if you're out eating burgers and fries all the dam time or even fine dining, no wonder americans are overweight. :( and then they complain about the food not being how the wanted it.. don't like it in the restaurant then go prepare it your dam self at home!

super good question...

[edit: oh and really, crockpots are awesome. and they're usually on sale somewhere. kohl's has sales like everyday. rice cookers too. pop a cup of rice in the rice cooker ... add a can of chili half way though and you'r got a meal right there... go boot up the computer and put your bag down and it's nearly done already!! it'l take ya longer to rip up some greens for a salad and cut up the avocado and tomato lol)

-lol thanks Jessie. it's honestly a good, thought-provoking question though! :)

I COOK MY OWN HOT POCKETS

People are just lazy.

Fast food is actually cheaper.

Too lazy. Too Busy. Don't want to.

we still cook at our house. we hardly ever eat out

i cook food for my whole family...!

because people are lazy and find fast food too convinient to pass up

I do, almost every night.

some still practice this long forgotten art. especially when the nearest restaurant is 20 miles away. lol

good question - we're on a budget and have been cooking at home a lot, and we've saved soooo much $, plus I've lost a few pounds - such great benefits, but sometimes I guess people just wanted to be catered to, which rarely happens at home

;)

I love cooking my own meals, so much more exciting.

Although it is a chore getting all the ingredients in.

But I'm a big fan!

Its not that we dont have enough time its that it takes to much time!

I totally agree, and I do cook the majority of my family's meals... but why not use the "not enough time" excuse? Its very legitimate in my eyes...

where did you get the conclusion that nobody cooks there own meals. Me, I give bread and 2 fish to 5000 people and they devide how to cook it.

I know it is cheaper, healthier... some are just lazy. Me, I just LOVE going out to eat. Don't like cooking. Don't mind it when there is company, but just to do the every day boring meals... blah!! I'd be about 25 lbs. lighter if I cooked more cause I don't usually like what I make!!
It is amazing that every restaurant in town is busy every night of the week though. Don't know why people don't stay home more often.

but not enough time is right between takin the kids to where they need to go and doin bills cleaning its hard to keep up with makin good meals

So I can have a job.

Well, I work, ride public transport and have a group that I attend almost nightly.
I cook or my boyfriend cook almost nightly.
sometimes, we run out of stuff and because of our schedule or transport issues, we cannot get to the store so we eat out.

It's the American way. People have too much stuff to do. It's also usually cheaper to buy fast food.

We are in a time and culture of convenience. Why spend the energy, and yes time, to conjure up a meal when there are a million establishments or pre-packaged meals to do it for you.

I do cook all my own meals. I live in a rural area, have to drive 15 miles to the nearest restaurant.
I have a garden every year, I can my vegetables and never have went hungry. Home cooking is the best, at least you know what your getting.

In my opinion, people what instant gratification. They want their food right then, when they think about. It is always easier to order/eat out then it is to stay at home and cook.

Lots of people still cook every meal...I'm included in that...most of the time...sometimes it Is easier to throw something in the microwave and call it a meal...I cook breakfast lunch and dinner in our house, and everyone is a bit healthier because of it...now, can I help when my kids go on a sleepover and the "hosting" parents feed them crap...no...but I can ask them to be mindful of what my child is eating, because they are on a semi-strict diet of verrry little junk food at home...

and as for the people who say fast food is cheaper: why then is a packet of Hot Pockets almost 2.50, and chicken is on sale most days at 98cents a lb?? would you rather eat for one meal, or three?? come on...quit being lazy...ths is why Americans are the highest percentage of obese people(i used to be one of them until I decided to study new recipes from different cultures to "spark" my interest in eating healthfully)...other cultures actually take knife to fresh meat and create ACTUAL meals...eesh...*washes her hands of the whole thing*

I do every friday.

The rest of the time it is my parents who cook.

So- people still cook their own meals.

I cook my own meals. I prefer whole foods not processed crap. Try to stay away from cans & boxes. So we're not all the same.

It's actually more expensive for one person... because to cook healthy your food goes bad before you can eat it all!

i think ppl are just too lazy to cook themselves

Mines in the oven now. I cook a lot more often than I eat out. I'm not overweight either. I contribute it to a better diet, and home cooked meals.

My mom cooks a meal almost 5 times a week...but the house is always so messy there could have been a tornado. I never realized how many people don't though. But really ordering pizza is too EASY.

The olden day Betty Crocker women who baked their own meals and slaved away over bread loaves were mostly HOMEMAKERS and didn't have jobs.

Now, almost every woman has a full time job and its a bit tougher to do this.
As this job is left up to the women and men hardly ever get into the kitchen, its hard to get the meals onto the table!! (I saw hardly ever because I know there are some guys that do this. To you, no offense!)
Especially if they are trying to raise kids too!!

"not enough time" excuses are pretty valid.

Go hot pockets!

I'm not saying that I agree with eating out, etc. I actually agree with you and I think that more families should be eating healthier meals and not fast food.
I just can see why some women struggle with doing this. Its not an easy task always!
Especially with kids griping because they wanted something different after you've slaved away over a hot stove for an hour or more.
