Smoking and training?!

Question: I work out with weights every night for a good length of time, and yesterday started jogging 2 miles, with the intent to do this every day, also. However, i smoke about 5 or 6 cigarettes a day, and a couple of joints a night. Jogging is a major stretch, as my lungs just cant hack it. Giving up really isnt an option, i like smoking. If i didnt like it, i wouldnt do it. But will my lungs become more efficient as i jog, enableing me to become fitter anyway?

I don't see why not, as a young recruit down the depot most of the P.T.I's were heavy smokers and could run for miles and i mean miles these boys were the fittest blokes Ive ever known, so anybody who says you cant run long distances and smoke are WRONG. one was a big drinker as well, never stopped him getting up in the mornings and giving us young lads a good beasting. Its what your body gets use to and 5/6 fags a day is not alot in time your body will adapt and you will find running easier. Keep it up you will defiantly improve with time

Nope, I'm an on and off avid runner trying to do a few miles every morning with the same problem - I smoke 4 or 5 or sometimes even 10 cigs a day and I enjoy it, but you can't have your cake and eat it - everytime I quit for a couple of months for training as excruciating as it is my lung capacity and cardiovuscular ability soars and when I smoke, well I can tell my muscles aren't getting enough oxygen - they just dont go together. Running will only make you realize just how unfit the smoking is making you and you ultimately make a choice. Exercise helps with the cravings though, often looking, feeling and despite the sweat, smelling good beats the pleasure of blazin'.

You will get fitter, theres no doubt about that, but your lungs wont get more efficient, in fact putting too much strain on them can cause serious infection/disease. Really smoking is the culprate for this and logic says you should stop smoking. But if you dont want to thats ok, it'll just make it harder for you

nope, when you smoke you are permanently damaging your broncciahls in your lungs, thereby reducing your o2 capacity. however, when you jog while you smoke, you are forcing your body to work with out the extra o2 (thats why you breathe harder than the normal person) so you are putting your body through more stress. you will still become fit as long as you can put up with the excess panting when you run.

Trust me i smoked for 15 years whilst running and weight training. I could never gain any weight. now i have stopped smoking i have gained two and a half stone, am much stronger and find it easier to run my same course. You know when you stop smoking your bones grow stronger as well, enabling you to lift more. Use fresh mint nicorettes. 4mg's first six months and then 2mg's until you deside to stop chewing them. It's hard at first it takes a few months before you see the light but you will.

Well dood,
I would say that your priorities need to change towards training. i am in similar situation i train muay thai and am on my university team. while i don't smoke just cuz training is too harsh i do smoke MAD HERBALLLL!!! and i can understand when you say ya like it cuz weed is something i can't realistically kick. to answer your question:
yes your lungs will become more efficient (slowly) and most likely adapt but you will progress much much slower and plateu forsure.
i would not only long distance run but do sprints and suicides those will make your lungs very efficient and prolly make you wana quit smoking (just the ciggs).
BOTTOM LINE: you will never be able to run more then couple miles without being winded or do over 20/30min interval training (sprints) smoking 6 ciggs n few j's a day no way no how cuz i would be doing it. haha

Honestly
