Protein is essential to building muscle. You don't neccesarily need to take protein supplement if you eat enough chicken, fish, beef, pork eggs or beans everyday but that is hard to do. You want to spread out your protein intake thoughout the day. Eat about 1 gram of protein for every lean lb of body weight. For instance if you weigh 180 lbs and have 10% body fat then your lean body weight is about 162 lbs so you need atleast 162 grams of protein per day. Eating a little extra protein isn't going to hurt your kidneys or liver if you are otherwise healthy but don't over do it (20-30 extra grams is ok).

Your body is starved for protein in the morning because you haven't eaten for 7 to 9 hours so it is crutial to eat protein in the mornings. Then spread out your intake of protein throughout the day eating 4 to 5 small meals per day and making sure to have a protein shake after your workout since that is another very important time to have it.

If you want to bulk up you need to eat more calories per day including complex carbs like wheat bread, wheat pasta or brown rice.

First off, no worries about your kidneys, its just whey.

Second, take it shortly after your workout. When working out, you are slowly tearing the muscle tissue. After ending the workout, your body uses protein (what is in the whey) to rebuild it, which in turn makes it larger. I generally wait for about 30 minutes then slam it back, your body is still in a slow down period at this time, but when your body is ready, your stomach will have digested the whey, this converting it over to protein that your body will need to make more muscle.

Good Luck

Best time is 30 min. after your workout or before sleep. These are the times your body will be using the protein to repair muscle.

YEAH! Protein will never hurt ya. Building block for muscle. For some people who want to gain weight like you. Have a protein shake with meals. I have one in between breakfast and lunch and then again inbetween lunch and dinner. Tear it up and get ripped!

let me preface by saying I've never taken whey, but I have taken creatine.

when I took creatine, the first week you loaded up on it and took it once before you worked out, once after, and once at night, for 2 weeks, then stopped for a week, then took it once after you worked out from then on.

I think thats what I did I'm not sure, but with protein and building muscle, usually after you workout will be your best bet, so that your body will use this new protein to rebuild your worn muscles.

First of all, your diet has to be balanced. Research a proper food diet for your current size, and discuss your goals with a nutritionist. If none is available, enough info is available online. Just look it up. Anyway, the best time to drink a protein shake is after a workout. 25 grams of protein is ok for your body to digest at one time. Try to get most of your protein the natural way-through food.

protein is best to be taken after workouts when your muscles need the amino acids to repair them.. one scoop should be enough....

you should also have some protein an hour before you workout.. its called post workout shake...

and no whey protein will not damage your kidneys unless u are taking in say 350 grams a day! which u are doing no where near...

The best time to take whey protein is about 10 minutes before your workout, and immediately after your workout. By taking the protein before the workout, your muscles will have protein to repair themselves even during the workout. And by taking it afterwards, it is quite obvious the protein will be used for muscle repair, which is why it is very important you take whey protein immediately after the workout to help muscle repair. If you want to get bigger than dont forget that.

Also you may be getting stronger, but not bigger... and this is because your not consuming enough calories. Creating a caloric surplus is the key to getting big. That's how pro bodybuilders get so big. How much you eat depends on your current body weight. Search on google for "bodybuilding calorie calculator" and you'll find your answer. For me I weigh 150, and I have to eat 3600 calories on non workout days, and 4200 calories on workout days. You have to find your own numbers.

Also from your meals you should be taking in about 1.5 to 2 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight if you are looking to put on more mass. I suggest you balance your meals with 40% protein, 40% carbs, and 20% fats.

Remember, to create a caloric surplus you need to consume more calories than you are burning, so try to limit the cardio and you'll get stronger and bigger. Good luck!
