I just want to know why people don't exercise?!


Question: For those of you out there who don't exercise I am intersted in the "why?" Lack of time? Lack of motivation? Work? Other priorities?
I have been heavily into weight lifting/cardio/clean eating for 7 years now and can't imagine living any other way. Even when I had my own business and worked from 6AM-10PM-7days a week I still had my regular gym schedule (and I was completely exhausted). This is not the choice everyone would make and I understand... I just wonder your reasons.

I hear what you are saying. I have recently been 'converted' to exercise and healthy living.
For years I was very unhealthy. Not overweight at all, I am skinny but I could not even walk up a flight of stairs without feeling puffed out, that's how bad I was.
So I cut out all junk from my diet, allowing only one treat per day. I joined a gym two weeks ago and at the start, couldn't walk on the treadmill for five minutes. Now I am doing 15 mins on the treadmill and 8 minutes on the cross trainer :o)
Prior to turning my bad habits around, I guess I just couldn't be bothered with exercise. But since starting I have felt so much better and have found on average, have been staying up an hour later each night :o)

why is 75 percent of Americans fat?? just makes the whole nation look bad.

<EDiT> to below... just cuz i don't stuff myself full of candy bars and biscuits doesn't mean i am stupid... in fact, i am probably the smartest person you know!!! I respect myself by taking care of my body... what's your excuse??

because people are different and some would rather do other things with there time. just because you do something does not make it right for everyone.

time and basically laziness

For me it's just that I hate sport and find working out so boring. I mean when it comes to whether I would rather do something I enjoy or waste an hour or so working out doing something I enjoy wins every time. I'm aware that I don't do enough exercise but in end I'm accepting that I don't have a perfect body because of my lack of interest and am happy with that.
I mean I do what I can anyway - I don't eat a lot of junk food and I walk everywhere that I can (I don't have a car for this reason) so I maintain my weight through other methods.

When I'm not in the habit of doing it, I forget how easy it is. I start thinking that it's such a pain to get my exercise outfit on, drive all the way to the gym, pay parking, etc. Plus when I'm not in the habit of doing it, whenever I do it it's harder because I'm not in shape. That discourages me from doing it again, because I remember how hard it was the last time. Mostly it's just laziness, and the 'lack of time' thing is just the best-sounding excuse.

people r just darn lazy! they wanna look good but dont hav ehte time, r too tired from work or just make to many excuses...oh well..thats why i dont wanna hear no commplaining from lazy people..unless, u have a sickness or problem with ure body function..there really is no excuse!

Well, first I say that people are different.

I do exercising 3-4 times a week but sometimes I skip a session or two becouse I'm depressed (been a depressionpatient for 3-4 years now :P) or otherwise just not on the mood.

And I can imagine why some people dont do exercise, for example my mom wakes up around 4-5AM and goes to sleep around 10-11PM and wakes up several times a night becouse of the dog or other reasons.

For me I would say it's mostly because I don't really see the need to. I am a naturally thin person and I don't really overeat so there's really not a need for me to exercise. I do walk my dog everyday but I don't really consider that exercise. I would like to think that if I started to actually gain weight and be fat that I would probably start to exercise but I guess I will find out if/when that happens!

I agree with you completely. I workout 5-6 days a week usually and i feel like i'm going to waste away if i miss a workout. Some people are just lazy and unmotivated i guess.

I am into healthy eating, but I totally lack the motivation and dedication to keep up a formal exercise routine. I have plenty of time, but I hate sweating.

That's not to say I sit around like a lump all day. I walk everywhere, and I hardly ever use an elevator. I climb so many flights of stairs everyday it makes my head spin.

I do what I have to do to maintain a body I am happy with -- healthy weight, but definitely no tone. If I ever get to the point in my life where I am unhappy with the lack of muscle definition on my body, I know that I'll have to do more.

In short:
Why do people eat unhealthy? Because it tastes good.
Why don't people exercise? Because it's hard.

well i didnt always exercise...but i always ate healthy which to me is 85% of staying in shape...LOL but i have been exercising for a while now and i can say i like...when im done...LOLLLLLLL before i do it i will admit um like uhhhh ...but i push myself and then half way through im having fun...then when im done i feel AWESOME!...and im always glad i did it.

well i used to be a lazy boozer and eat whatever young adult. i did walk to my work and walk whenever i visted the city because i didn't drive. and i just stayed at the same weight.
but i didn't feel entirely healthy.
some people just don't have time for it or feel healthy enough not to. they probably need to knows the risks of not exercising.

I know what you mean. Our health is one of the most important things in our lives. It's pretty sad to see that some people don't care about their bodies, and don't take pride in keeping themselves looking sexy and fit.

I love to workout because it gives me that sense of accomplishment. Making progress in the gym is a really great feeling for me. I wish that all people could have that same perspective. For one of my writing classes Im even going to write a piece satirizing obese children. I know its not going to make everyone want to go exercise, but I still want to write it.

As for reasons why people may not exercise... the list goes on and on. I know a CEO who simply does not have time for much exercise. The most he does is run at 4 am in the morning for 15 mins or so with his two dogs, before he goes off to work. He gets at most 4 hours of sleep because he works so hard.
Then you have some people who just dont care. Could be a number of reasons like video games. Who cares what happens in the real world, when the virtual world is so much better? And then theres people who just want to eat all the junky stuff because it tastes good, who can blame them?
Stuff like that.

me personal i like working out. it took me awhile to find what i like to do to keep in shape. im in high school so there isnt alot of choices. but i joined track and cross country and i love ever min of it. i also love to eat my whole team does.

i work out because i dont want to see myself down the road having a heart attack due to my weight or gettin high blood pressure.

to me i see some people not having the time to get into shape or to stay in shape. also not being motvated enough too. it doesnt help that children today have xbox and ps3s to keep them inside all day unlike the most of us who grew up going out side to have fun. high school kids too dont have the time to when now we get 3- 4 hours of hw each night.

doesnt help that their are more fast food places around and a parent whos worked long hours doesnt feel like cooking a meal choose to go to a fast food resturant.

why would a person want to get into shape when there are these new "quick" fixes around. i wouldnt stay in shape either if i knew they really worked. but they dont staying in shape takes more then just not eatting something or going on an all water diet. thoes are pretty much scams so dont fall for them people.

in america it is mostly the younger group of the population who are becoming over weight and mostly its our own fault and societies.

lack of motivation, they don't love them-self like U do, they work everyday that what they think that enough( fat people).
