It depends how fast you're going. I usually burn 500-600 calories in a run, and I run at an average of 5.5mph for 45 minutes.

A little quicker than my normal pace of walking is 4mph so it would take more than an hour to burn 500 calories.

To walk 5 miles..it depends on your pace once again. You could set the treadmill to 5mph and you'd get it done in an hour, but 5mph is a light jog.

But start off slow and just walk. Then as you get comfortable doing this, do a walk/jog combination. Soon you'll be able to step it up to a run and do some interval training! Don't worry about the numbers just yet; focus on just training yourself and building up your stamina :)

Well I am not sure about walking but if you run a steady pace of 7.0 with no incline for 15 minutes, that would burn around 200 calories.....I know you mean walking but running is good to and it will burn calories faster.

On the treadmill, 1 mile is typically about 130 calories, give or take a few. I've burned 1,000 calories in a little over an hour, but I'm a long distance runner.

You will burn around 50 calories an hour just by sleeping or watching TV. Your downfall is eating after you finish running.
