Chin up/Pull up bar?!

Question: I want to strengthen my arms, so yesterday I bought and installed one of those doorway chin up bars.

I'm very weak in my upper body, so how should I start going about using it to help my biceps/triceps and abs?

I heard that starting with your chin above the bar and slowly lowering yourself is a good way to start building up strength. Is that true?

well its kinda true, but a bit reversed!

first off yes the doorway pull up bars are great to use!! very cheap, and a great workout, i use mine all the time.

second, you should start standing at your normal height, and then start doing the pull up/ chin up. dont start with your chin above the bar, and dont start hanging as low as possible either, you do that when you get stronger.

just do the pull up, and when you lower your self, yes lower your self slowly, it is good resistance and will have better results.

It might help a little. If you can do one or two pull ups it would be better to do as many as you can, but if you can't do any pull ups at all yet a 'let down' might be one place to start.

The problem with a pull up bar is that you need to be able to lift your own weight to get the best use from it. You might think about doing is purchases some dumbbells with adjustable weight discs (from 10 lbs up to 50 - 60 lbs). This will allow you to start at a lower level and work your way up.
