Bent out of shape-maybe running a marathon-advice?!

Question: I really want to motivate myself to lose some weight.. I thought maybe running a marathon would do me some good..

I haven't ran in a long time, and was horrible in mile runs in High School (my best time was 10 mins and 15 secs ).
The Marathon is 26.5 miles, and to be honest that scares the ____ out of me. It's not until June 1, of 2008 and gives me roughly 4 months to train..

Here's the link in case you want to check it out, http://www.rnrmarathon.com/course_info.h...

Any advice/help/suggestions? Should I continue with the race if I really am intimidated?

I think you are setting yourself up for a major letdown. No offense, but why do you want, or need to run a marathon? You need a coach, and major running experience. I appreciate that you want some motivaion, but maybe you should start out with a 5k or some relatively easy distance so you can complete it. If you start out with a really difficult goal, and don't complete your goal, and fail, you will be very disappointed, and your weight loss regime will go out the window. How about cutting back on calories, less sweets, less fast food, a daily walk or bike ride, more salads, and fruits. If you don't live too far from work, you could bike to work once or twice a week, or more. You can also bike to the store, and library. Marathons usually have lesser distances you can run integrated into the marathon itself. I suggest if you run, you run a lesser distance to begin with.

try it. Just exercise first.
