I bursted a blood vessel in my eye from powerlifting.?!

Question: i was training on the bench press with 440 lbs. On the 24th i was going to compete in a powerlifting competition. But now that this happened my trainer is telling me to forget about the competition and rest.. So i was wondering, is this dangerous ? should i go to the doctor ? I don't feel any pain. The only thing is that from the corner of my eye all the way into my pupil is all red. there is no discharge and i can see fine.. I hate going to the Doc, and end up leaving empty handed.. Any sugestions ??

I've done the same thing on several occasions. Both of my cases were years apart, but it does happen. In both cases as yours, I was going heavy in the 6 to 8 reps range. I was doing chest the first time and all my movements (six different chest movements) were heavy and only one minutes rest between sets....Being a paramedic I had a thought that I had just strained way to hard...which was the case...Working chest usually makes one flex around the neck and face and it was just to much strain on the small vessels in the eye....rest in good...or you can do as I did and back way down the weight scale. For a month I went 12 to 15 reps with light to moderate weight. That way I kept up with things, just didn't put the strain in as I had done before...You should skip the competition. Heal first, they'll be others you can do.. In an extreme case I once heard of, but never verified, a weightlifter detached his retina during a competition....

Your trainer is right. All you need is rest. The problem should correct itself. It takes awhile for the blood to drain out, but you'll be fine. If you get blurry vision or any pain, then I'd see a doctor, otherwise rest.

your trainer needs to teach you how to correctly breath during exercises. val salva manuevers (holding breath while lifting) causes blood vessels to burst. your body absolutely needs oxygen flow throughout the movement!

also.. it will go away soon, unless it persists for a terribly long time i would stay away from the doc... just wasted money.

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE your breathing techniques!

try to get some rest.. dont compete anytime soon.. u could rupture something else or make it even worse..if it gets any worse please go to the doc... i know u hate it.. but its better to be safe than sorry
