I eat when im bored?!


Question: i always eat when im bored, or when im craving a certain food.. i just eat randomly and not when im hungry.

Intuitive eating (eating only when you are hungry, and not when you are bored) is something you did when you were a baby. When you were hungry, you cried and your mom fed you. When you were full, you became disinterested in the milk you were drinking and your mom stopped feeding you. Your body was signaling your hunger and satiety (feeling full).

Now that you are older, do you still eat intuitively? Do you eat when you are hungry and stop eating when you are full (and not overstuffed)? By eating in this way, you are listening to your body tell you how much to eat. You are the only one who knows just how hungry you are. By eating intuitively, you are feeding your body so that you will grow in a way that is right for you.

It is much easier to eat intuitively when you eat regular meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Sometimes it is hard to wake up in the morning; you may find yourself rushing off to school without breakfast. However, breakfast supplies the carbohydrates that fuel your brain, and you need your brain to be at its sharpest when you are in school. Try to wake up 10 or 15 minutes early to be sure you have time to sit down for a quick breakfast.

You probably eat lunch around noon, and then have dinner six or seven hours later. That is a long time to go without eating. If you are listening to your body for signs of hunger, you may need an after-school snack before you do your homework or go to soccer practice. Your snack should be just the right size: not too small and not too big. Remember, you should feel hungry when you sit down with your family for dinner.

The wonderful thing about intuitive eating is that when you are responding to your body's signals of hunger and satiety, the food will taste much better than if you are eating when you are not really hungry. However, you should not ignore your body's signals of real hunger and wait too long to eat. By doing this, you may overeat and find it difficult to feel satisfied with what you are eating.

Eating intuitively is best, because it means that you are the one in control and that you trust yourself to feed your body properly.
