Why do many people think muscle can turn into fat?!

Question: Why do they think this? Is it from word of mouth or just an idea? I need some sources to why people think this myth to be true

It's definitely a common misconception that muscle turns into fat. I think that it's partly due to the fact that if you become less active and you don't make any dietary changes, your body weight increases and your appearance also changes (you develop a softer look) and people naturally assume that it's down to the muscle turning into fat, not that they have lost muscle tone and gained a layer of body fat over those muscles. It's something I come across on a daily basis in my job as a Personal Trainer and Class Instructor.

Well it is true in your Q. If you don't exercise then your muscles will weaken. That's just like people that are paraplegics who are in wheel chairs all their lives and can't move their legs b/c they can't move them or not as much as a person that is not a paraplegic. Or else your muscles are just there and you don't work out and then they just sit there with gaining muscle and then soon there is more fat than muscle.

that's what my pe teach told me

Mate its just a myth because people who tend to do alot of strength work tend to get big muscles and need to eat alot to feul them. when they stop their programs they continue eating the same amount of food and that excess food get converted into fat. Now we all know that muscle can not turn into fat but its these types of examples that cause such rumours to emerge. As for sources that will be a dificult one if you are looking for references.
