Am I doing too much exercise? Your opinions, please?!

Question: Hi there,
I'm just wondering if maybe I am over doing it regarding exercise? People are moaning slightly at me, saying I'm doing too much and I need to be careful. This is what I do -->
Sunday, Monday and Wednesday - Run (in between 20-30 mins)
Tuesday and Friday - Martial Art for 2 hours each day (hard work!)
Thursday - This is my 'gym day' . I do about 45mins-1 hour total.
Saturday - day off.

I eat right, completely. 3 meals a day, usually consisting of special k for breaky, soup for lunch and a dinner of chicken and veggies / spaghetti bolognaise / turkey and rice etc. I've lost 6 pounds in 2 weeks. Drink loads of water and eat at least 5 a day. And my fitness is improving! My goal is to be extrememly fit so I can start playing football again.

Am I exercising too much? I don't really like taking days off anymore, I still have a bit of weight to lose and I feel great with the weight I've lost already. Your opinion greatly appreciated!

That sounds fine to me- well done and keep up the good work!

The important thing is to listen to your body- make sure you are stretching every day, as otherwise you could be prone to injury. Stretching is the most important prevantative method when doing lots of exercise.

Also make sure you are sleeping at least 8 hours a night- your body needs time to recover. I would also recommend getting a full body massage once a month minimum.

If you get any aches and pains be careful, take it easy and give your body time to recover. There is a fine line between pushing through the pain barrier to get fitter and doing yourself an injury that could put you out of action for a month!

Good luck!

thats sound like a good work out plan to me well done

you say you have good meals, which is the most important. Are you healthy?

that is an intensive program, but i cannopt see what harm could ever come of it! Its fine.

ur body will tell u if ur over doing it. u can never get enough exercise.

Wow, I am no expert but if you are eating well and training i think its okay? Although maybe reduce to 5? Not really sure but if you say you want to get fit and you are eating carbs it seems okay to me. Just be careful to not over do it as if you want to lose wight and then slack off you will pile it back on. If you reduce a Little it will be much easier to stick to long term

No, not at all. The exercise will keep you fit and ready for any physical ambition. I wonder though, if this schedule is too exhaustive for you and if it is too demanding (time and effort).

This seems like a very nice regimen and not excessive at all. The key to me would be how you are tolerating it--that is no excessive fatigue or recurring stress injuries. If it invigorates you go for it.

Sounds fantastic, and you've even given yourself a day off for your muscles to rest and rebuild themselves. Keep up the great work! I wish i had your motivation :)

If your muscles are handling it properly and it seems like they are I don't think this is too much, especially if you have the time to do it all and are enjoying your routines. You seem to have found a balance you like, which is important.

As long as you feel ok and aren't too tired/ developing injuries then you should be fine.
Try taking your resting heart rate in the morning. If on any day it seems higher than usual, you may be overtraining and need a rest.

I don't think it's too much at all. Keep at it!

personally i dont think you are although you should try to spread itacrosss several weeks instead of just in the one week, and every week. Try missing out the gym once a week and running once. You seem to be doing good so well done (: But do try not to overwork your body or you could cause yourelf an injury - and youd just pile weight back on if it makes you less mobile than it has gotten used to (**)

It sounds like you are doing a very good job. I would say that you are definately not overdoing it, it sounds like a good workout routine. If you feel good then it shouldn't be a problem. Your body will tell you if you are overdoing it.

no that is not too much!! no were near too much!!. your doing it very well. if your were running for like 2 hours(instead of 30 minutes) that would be too much. you have everything spaced very well, with enough time for recovery.

good for you, keep it up!

i used to do stuff like you, i was doing weight training, crazy cardio, martial arts and wrestling . that was a little too much! LOL

no, ur not doing too much exercise. actually everyone should do the same kind of exercise everyday.

and make sure u keep eating healthy food.
good luck :)

well you are not really over doing it if you look it at this way you are doing 4h and 15 mins of excercise each week so 4h and 15 mins out of 168 hours is not much.

as long as you are in your BMI (body mass index) and a good weight there is nothing wrong with excercising everyday..

I think it sounds fine. You good to take a day off and rest. Your body needs rest.

Exercise wise, this seems fine.

Your 3 meals should be split into 5-6 small meals per day to keep your metabolism at it's peak.

If your training this hard you need to ensure you have enough protein in every meal.
Special K is NOT a good start for breakfast although Kelloggs seem to have marketed it as a healthy slimming cereal. It's loaded with sugar and nothing else of much nutritional benefit. Cornflakes would be more of a healthier option compared to Special K, this is one of my gripes but that's marketing for you!

I'd recommend a small bowl of porridge consisting of oats, water, 1 scoop of whey protein powder and some fruit like blueberries on top. Or museli with apple juice instead of milk with a dollop of greek yoghurt.

You can snack in between meals and this should consist of fresh fruit, nuts & seeds(unsalted and unroasted, almonds, walnuts, brazil nuts, hazelnuts, pumkin and sunflower seeds).

You also need to make sure your taking enough EFA's (oily fish, flaxseed oil etc contain these).

Other than that, it looks like your on a fairly healthy diet, just needs a bit of a tweak.

Keep it up and congratulations on your gains!

that sounds like a really good plan to me!
and it's obviously working.
