Questions about calories?!

Question: So I've been trying to lose weight over the past few weeks. I've been eating better and getting lots of physical activity. While I certainly FEEL better I just haven't lost much weight at all(and I'm well over-weight).

I had thought the most important part of weight-loss was burning more calories than you take in. Now I've learned that if you don't take in enough calories, your body goes into "starvation mode". I think that's what I've been doing and I say it's one hell of a setback. I certainly don't starve myself, but I've been watching my calories very closely and keeping them as low as possible.

1. How many calories per day are required to avoid this "starvation mode"?

2. Should the calories I eat per day scale with the amount of calories I burn? EX: If I work out extra-hard or extra-long one day, should I eat more calories that day?

3. I want to lose weight as quickly as possible but do it without hurting myself. What is a healthy amount of weight to lose per week?

You require 1200 calories per day, everyone's body is different, find your BMR here

Then, that will tell you the number of calories your body burns just sitting, doing nothing. You can subtract 300-500 calories from this number (keeping in mind that you need to stay ABOVE 1200 calories) for weight loss. Focus on eating healthy foods, not just meeting your 1200 calories. Eat 5-6 small meals a day, and this keeps your metabolism burning more fat all day. It will also help speed your metabolism up. No you shouldn't eat more calories if your trying to lose, stay within a 200 calorie range of your target number (example, if your trying to eat 1500 calories a day, one day eat 1300, the next eat 1700, Then 1400. then 1500, etc, bounce it around a little). Make sure your doing cardio to workout (running, walking, bike riding, swimming, the elliptical machine, kickboxing, tai bo, etc, things that get your heart rate up), this is what burns fat, and drops inches.
Hope I answered your questions, GOOD LUCK!!!

About 1500 calories a day is normal when you want to lose weight. If you eat less than 1000 calories a day, your body will go into starvation mode and hold on to your body fat more than ever.
2 pounds a week is healthy to lose.

the reason is calories have nothing to do with losing weight
you could eat 15 cokies a day and be under your calorie intake but cookies are still bad for you when losing weight dont count calories look at fat and saturated fats. eatr good healthy wholsome foods.
