Am I hitting a wall? Advice please!?!

Question: Me: M 57 5'10" 220# type 2 diabetic

A year ago I finally got motivated and have been working out regularly. At first (of course) I was pretty weak. I have now gotten to the point where I'm doing a pretty intense hour+ workout 3X weekly, with gentler workouts on a couple of other days. I'm up to over 40 minutes on the elliptical (aiming to get to 1 hour) plus weight work and about 15 minutes of exercise bike to cool down. In warmer weather I've been swimming laps and taking very long walks.

I'm concerned because I don't seem to be improving my breath capacity. When I walk up a flight of stairs I still am huffing and puffing a little. When I take water while working the elliptical, I have to do several really deep breaths immediately.

I'm also constantly aware that my knees don't take to this sort of work as happily as they would have 30 years ago, but I suppose that's unavoidable.

Any observations or advice about how to manage my routine for more results?

I don't really know if this is accurate for you or not but I personally started to work out alot and I just recently noticed that I was having trouble excelling. I think that I was using more vitamins and minerals than my normal diet was providing. My problem (I think) was that I had been working out so hard that I had used alot of the nutrients that my body had stored but in the course of my working out I had become anemic? So now I take some multi-vitamins to get more iron. I don't know if something similar could be happening for you but good luck. I also take Glucosamine with Chondroitin+MSM for my knees and other joints. They sell it at most super markets in many forms. I like it, I use a jackhammer all the time and I had a ton of problems with my fingers and wrists. I feel better now so it may help?

Type 2 Diabetes you really need to be careful. What I did was get 2 packages. The one for weight loss from www.independentachievement.com It literally saved me from my sugar addiction and got me drinking more water and stopped me from overeating. I actually got it both on cd and download. The other is the home exercise boot camp set of dvds called P90X from www.beachbody.com

great job on exercisng fisrt off!! :-D
it is funny becasue my mother was just telling me about breathing while I'm working out.
when you are working out, breath as much as you can through your nose then out with your mouth. it may hurt your insides, just b/c that part of your body has not been used to breath. in a matter of time you will notice that you will breath better.
