Muscular strength is not a matter of muscular size. There is myofibrillar hypertrophy, sarcoplasmic hypertrophy. Sarcoplasmic is generally an increase in size and not strength. Myofibrillar is an increase of filament desnsity and general makes the muscle denser harder and more able to contract as opposed to bigger.Aslo there is a distict differance it types of muscular strength. Powerlifters possesing more maximimum strength, than say olympic lifetrs who posses explosive strength. Swimmers or runners have stength endurance. I reccomend Ross Enamaits books "Infinite Intensity" and "Never Gymless" to give you the information to posses all manners of strength and be fit for anything. They are the best books on the market. For the nay sayers check Ross Deadlift 495 at a bodyweight of 170 on youtube , Ross Doesn't even train for the deadlift or reccomend it. He can also triple hand clap. Trust no one less.

technique is the main key. if the smaller guy has better form then he can lift more. doesn't make him stronger than the bigger guy. Just means he knows about lifting and the proper form.

This is not rocket science, he is stronger. If you want to get stronger power lift, if you want to get bigger, body build.

There are a number variables. The lighter guy could have been lifting longer, he could've used better form, etc. Where did you witness this event take place?

muscle distrubution on the body.

hard to gain slender people often become more solid as they work out, they may actually lose weight and inches but increase overall strength.... bulky muscular people on the other hand have to lift up their bulk weight in addition to whatever weight they are trying to lift, sometimes the larger people get (even if it is muscle) the lower their performance levels become (case in point... the show "Fear Factor" the slender, next to nothing in weight people tended to always out perform the muscular heavier ones)

The answer is physics, biology and genetics. Size does not necessary correlate with power. There are fast twitch and slow twitch muscle fibers in the human body. The more fast twitch fibers you have the better you will be at explosive movements. Other factors such as the bodies presence adrenaline, calcium, potassium and , phosphocreatine which play a role in muscle funtion. Also shorter arms provide a better leverage system in bench press.

I have a friend way smaller than my self who can bench more than me and it's not because he is stronger it's only because his arms are shorter than mine are it takes less for him to get the weight up than it does for me we both had the same coach and we both started lifting at the same time but he was able to max higher than I was.
But on the other hand technique does play a big role in lifting did both guys warm up if so did the big guy do it to much. maxing on the bench is more mental than anything I was stuck at 300 forever I only benched more than that when they loaded my bar with 350 and told me it was 300. but with out witnessing it my self I can't say for certain what it was.
