Why do people give you a hard time for not finishing all your food?!

Question: Like at restaurants, waiters and friends complain how you don't eat everything. I don't prescibe to the "clean your plate" club because eating everything just makes you fat. I believe in eating when hungry and stopping when full. Simple and much more healthier.

The idea of "cleaning your plate" dates back to the Great Depression. Since money and food was scarce during this period, food was not wasted, so parents told their children to clean their plate, because they did not always know when they would eat again OR they were told to clean their plate and be grateful they had food.
Anyhow, the children grew up with those ideals about not wasting food and became parents that have passed this beleif down to their children, who also passed it down to their children and finally here you are being lectured about cleaning your plate. So cleaning your plate is not a remark that is intended to offend YOU, the fact that you didnt eat all your food kinda offend THEM, because it goes against the values they were taught as a child. i hope i made sense :)

Try to obtain smaller portions when ordering. I do that because like you, I'm don't belong to the "clean your plate club" either. Most restaurants will provide smaller portions if you ask, but don't expect to pay less.

I've never had a waitor complain when I didn't finish everything on the plate. Most people don't. That's why they have to go boxes.

The reason is because the food not eaten is wasted. We create enough trash as it is. Some people also believe that wasting food when there are starving people should be a crime.

If you know that you aren't going to eat everything in a full portion, either ask for a smaller portion or take the leftovers home with you. Just because you do not want to force all the food down at one sitting doesn't mean you have to be wasteful.
