Protein powder for teenager?!

Question: My son is 5'5 and weighs 235#. He's overweight but also very stocky and stout and very wide across the chest. He's not flabby at all. His football coach told him to drink 2 protein shakes a day. He's been drinking them and working weights for about a month now and I can already see he's getting bigger. My concern is since he's already heavy, what happens if he gets hurt or has to drop football for some reason and no longer works out regularly? Will all this bulk turn to fat even if he quits the shakes or will the muscle just go away? I hope this doesn't sound stupid, I'm just concerned and know next to nothing about this stuff.

he won't necessarily get fat if he stops working out, as long as he eats right and gets enough exercise to not gain too many calories
however, the muscle will slowly go away, but not completely

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. I would not tamper with that sort of regimen until he gets down to a normal weight. You should not need protein additives if you are getting the proper amount in your diet. I would definitely straighten his diet out. He should be getting the proper nutrition in his diet and it should be balanced with the proper carbs, protein, vitamins and minerals. I see nothing wrong with vitamin supplements though. Good luck.

Hey Pretty Kitty,
I might just know that answer. Some shakes have ingredients that you don't know about. Sometimes they just don't tell you if your food has stuff that could, well, make you get fatter. The shakes that your giving your son probably has minerals in it that are bad for you. (For instance, some products have labels on them that say "This makes you lose weight" but really instead of making you skinnier, they make you fatter. My advice to you is to stop giving him shakes and find another way for him to lose weight. Maybe you should put him on a diet (It will help!). Some diets work for different people. It all depends on what your son likes. I'll give you an example of a diet that really works!! It's called the South Beach Diet. It works really good!! My mom was over weight a little so she wanted to go on a diet. Her friend suggested the South Beach Diet. Ever since shes been doing the wonderful diet. You can eat almost just like you normally do, and you can still lose weight!! Maybe take him to a exercise place or a gym were he can work out 1-3 times a week (again, it depends on what you want and what he wants). Out of all diets, I would really recommend South Beach Diet. If he refuses to do a diet, I would then trust Shaklee. It has very good products!! My grandma and grandpa sell it as thier job. There is also a VERY GOOD diet called Cinch. It really works too!! Go to www.shaklee.com. It also has makeup, protein bars, kids chewables, etc.!! Trust me, Shaklee is the one you can rely on!! BEST WISHES ON YOUR SON!! -Alicia :)
