What's wrong with me..? I know i'm definately not..?!


Question: ...anorexic because i'm 14 and weigh about 7 stone (which i think is about right) but i always starve myself from 7 o clock in the morning til 4 o clock in the afternoon. So basically i go through a whole school day without food and it feels really good..but when i get home i always stuff my gob and eat loadz and loadz. I feel like i've got no control anymore, this has been going on for months now but i'm too scared to tell my mum as i know she'll go mad! My cousin had an eating disorder, so i know it's nothing to be taken lightly..What's wrong with me?? Please help! Thankyou x

i dont know if thats a real problem at all. i used to do the same. i was never below my average weight and i love to eat!!! :D it was a bit riduculous after a while because i started to grow all over again so i was more and more hungry. then in time i became amnemic. thats not a good thing to be. your body starts to lack in essential vitamins and minerals. remember, not eating for more than 4 hours and your body goes into accute starvation. 6 and it gets serious. everything you eat after an absence of food thats that long is stored as fat, purely because your body doesn't know when the next meal will be. start by eating breakfast, at least an apple or something a bit more sufficient. after this your body will want/crave food during the day. the reason you feel so good is due to the endorphines released which act as a painkiller so that you dpon't feel the pain of hunger. take a small snack at first to school, eat that throughout the day. inbetween lessons maybe or at break and lunch. stop starving yourself because it really isn't healthy. there is no problem with you actually, i think it does just have a lot to do with age. a lot of my friends went through simular ordeals. like me :)

Your a teenager, thats what teenagers do

just try to eat a lil bit through out the day and just get control back cuz thats not good if u feel like ur losing control that why eating disorders start... but not eating till that time might not be the most healthy thing but its not gunna kill u so if thats how u like eating go 4 it

Maybe, it's just that you don't feel comfortable eating in public and have conditioned yourself just to eat at home in comfort.
It's not unheard of.

to start i would say you could be a little underweight! If you dont feel you can talk to your parental units (which i would suggest you do as its something they can help you with) try calling NHS direct if youre in the uk (0845 46 47). or go to www,nhsdirect.co.uk and you can seek advice on there.

be careful and try and speak to your parents. They will be able to help you!

Maybe your body used to not getting any food in these hours. I never eat any breakfast anymore cause my body got used to it and I just can't

I don't think it's anything serious; one of my friends only eats a packet of crisps during the school hours...

Skipping meals. That is your problem. Breakfast are exceptionally important as to start your day. Stuffing in food for the rest of the day is a very normal habit for those who skip breakfast. If you start eating properly, you problem should fades away as well. Exercising frequently will help you gain control over your appetite and mind as well.

ok so starving yourself isnt a good idea, and you end up eating the same amount of food in the end anyway because you are so hungry. do you feel able to eat a small amount for breakfast or lunch (or both?).
this is probably the best step for you to start with if u are able to, and then you hopefully will eventually stop eating so much when u get home & therefore end up with a more balanced diet.

you should also address the issue of insecurity? do you not feel happy with yourself?
talk to your mum about this, you dont have to tell her about the eating problem yet...

Talk to a counselor at school in privacy. What it comes down to is that you are going to have to make the decision that your health is important enough to make yourself eat in the morning and during the day. You are actually hurting yourself more than you know because not only are you starving your system for the entire day, but you are also overloading it in the evening. This will lead to major complications internally if you do not get help and swith your eating habits. Stop thinking about it as "feeling good" during the day that you havent eaten. You should be "feeling bad" that you are hurting yourself and starving your body of the essential vitamins and nutrients that it NEEDS to grow and be strong. You are 14 years old, and that is FAR to young to be depriving your body of the essentials. Be very careful that you do not allow this to take control of you and lead into other even more dangerous levels of disorder.

You should eat a healthy breakfast and a snack (if hungry) and then a heavy lunch and then a light dinner.

It's not anorexia if you're bingeing - that would be bulimia. The problem really comes when you start to purge as well (ie vomit or take laxatives after eating). At the moment it sounds like you're eating the right amount, just not at the right times. It might be worth having a chat with your GP (who has to respect your confidentiality regardless of your age), just to make sure there's nothing more sinister developing. This could easily be a response to stress, depression, grief or anything of those horrible things that 14-year-olds go through.
