The word itself means "heart". Getting your heart rate up for at least 30 min. a day is good for the heart and just so happens to burn calories. Cardiovascular Exercise, increases your heart rate which accelerates caloric burn. It also strengthens the heart muscle which promotes better caloric burning even when not exercising. Unused calories are stored in the body as fat, the prefered source of energy for the human body. By increasing caloric burn beyond daily intake your body must find sources of energy for normal functions and goes to stored body fat its prefered source.

Cardio is typically short for cardiovascular, with the cardio part of the word referring to your heart. So cardiovascular exercise is the type of exercise that gets your heart rate up in what's known as the 'training zone', and then keeps it up for a specific period of time. Usually 20 minutes plus.

More frequently this is referred to as 'aerobic' exercise because your body requires oxygen to supply the fuel for you to continue exercising.

Aerobic exercise is only one part of what you need to lose weight, but it's an important part. When you exercise aerobically, not only are you burning lots of calories but most of those calories are fat. An additional benefit is that as you become more fit your body becomes better and better at using fat as an energy source because of changes to your metabolism and increases in the enzymes your body needs to metabolize fat.

The other things you need to lose weight are a calorie deficit, so that you're eating about 500 calories a day less than your body needs, and a good weight training program. Weight training helps you keep the muscle you might normally lose while losing weight, and also helps stimulate your metabolism to burn more calories.

Walk for 20 minutes 3x a week minimum. But the more you do, the better. Don't run!
