I weighed 114 now i weigh 128 since i went on depakote what to do?!

Question: Jorie,

My daughter is bi-polar and she was on depakote. She worked with her therapist/life manager and they found that she needed the calories to assimilate the depakote properly. The depakote made her sleep more so she wasn't burning the calories she was taking in. Make sure you get in a good walk each day.

There is a book that is called "The Eat-Clean Diet" by Tosca Reno. It teaches you how to ramp up your metabolism by making healthy changes to your diet.

Oh, by the way, if you have any side effects like drooling, head or hand shaking or any nervous twitches that you can't control, see your doctor!

My mother experienced the same thing, but the pills kept her from having seizures. This probably extended her life many years. She did better on Dilantin, but it takes a knowledgeable (preferably board certified) Internist and/or Neurologist to make the best recommendations (assuming the drug is being used for control of seizures/epilepsy.) The Dilantin had side effects if its own, as most drugs do. Talk with your doctors and see if you have an alternative. A registered dietitian may also be able to assist and consult with your doctors to help control a weight gain. There may also be a secondary drug to aid in this side effect. At the end of the day, a little extra weight, which was mostly water in my mother, was a small price to pay for having her around for years longer. Good luck and God bless you.
