OK I'm a vegetarian and a little worried .....?!

Question: that I'm not getting enough iron and all that. I eat fish and dairy but is that enough? Also, I've tried iron supplements but they actually make me pretty sick so I've been advised not to take them!
What else might boost up my iron levels and help boost my energy levels?
Thanks guys!

It's hard to get enough protein if you're a vegetarian but not as bad as if you're a vegan. Fish is a good natural source for iron but dairy is not. Other good sources are dried beans and prunes, raisins and apricots; cereal with iron additives and whole grains and oats, brown rice; almonds and brazil nuts; and veggies like broccoli, kale, spinach, asparagus and dandelion greens.

Without beef you're missing the prime source for iron but if you consume enough from other dietary sources you'll be okay. I would not suggest increasing the dose of your iron supplement if it makes you sick. I would try a different brand, the formulation varies and inactive ingredients in one brand may make you sick while another is fine.

As the link below shows, eating fish or anything rich in vitamin c with your greens or beans will help you absorb more iron. My sister was a vegan, now she's a vegetarian and she has osteoporosis and other health problems. Since she's the only one in our family with these problems and the only one who's been vegan/vegetarian, I think this isn't the best way to stay healthy so you need to be more careful than average about what you eat.

Hope this helps.

I am anemic and take iron pills every day.

but do you know what caused my anemia...

my dad forcing me to be a vegetarian when I was younger for 7 years. ironic lol.

the iron supplements should not make you feel this way. get a better potency and try.

I found out I'm iron deficient as well and I've been doing a combination of regular multivitamins and eating a crapload of broccoli. I'm not dead yet so I'm assuming it's working okay ;)

green leafy vegies... they are best sources of iron and lean meats too, but green leafy vegies are still the best. whether you like vegies or not, it will still be the best and Iberett vitamins too... don't think too much of the after taste but the good it will do for your health. sleep early too.

try beans, tofu and...

my favorite....
