Why does my weight keep going up and down?!

Question: This is driving me CRAZY!!! I started working out on January 21, 2008. Five weeks later I have only lost 10 pounds. Is that good or realistic at this point? I just feel like I work out so hard and only 10 pounds. I started out at like 198.2 and I am now between 187.5 and 188.0.

I try to eat five meals per day (three main meals and two snacks). I try to drink at least 64 oz. of water. Sometimes I do more and sometimes I do a little less. I workout five to six times per week. I do cardio for an hour or so. I try to do an intense workout. Somewhere between 4.0 and 4.2. I recently started jogging on the treadmill in one minute increments. I usually burn anywhere between 500 to 600 calories per day on the treadmill. I also do circuit training which is usually 30 to 40 minutes.

This week I started doing some of the aerobic and weight classes to cut back on the circuit a little (it was making me sore). Depending on what I ate the night before ...

10 pounds in five weeks is VERY good. It's actually not healthy to loose more than 10 pounds a month,so that;s very good.It also depends on what you do at work,if you sit in a desk all day that could be a problem

Don't worry. The same thing happens to me. First of all, 10 pounds in a week is a really good amount. Trust me, that's a lot for a normal person. Do you know how much your calorie intake should be? 2000 is for the average american, but if you work out that much, yours would probably be a lot higher. Do you see how many calories you take in one day compared to the next? One day I'd have about 2200 cals like I'm supposed to, and the next I'd feel I ate a lot of junk, but I actually ate about 1700 and I'd lose weight just in that one day. Go see your doctor and ask for some good healthy tips.

10 pounds in 5 weeks is great! Considering if you diet and excersize in a healthy way the average weight loss for a week is about 2 pounds.

Thats totaly normal. And you should not be weighing yourself that frequently. It is recommended that you only weigh yourself once a week. You should always weigh yourself at the same time each time. Like in the morning after using the bathroom. You are right on track though. The healthiest weight loss is 2lbs per week. Keep up the good work.

Everyones weight fluctuates because of fluids in the body. It is probably water weight. It sounds like you have done quite well! Congrats! You can find some great dietary books at www.planetyorgos.com
