I quit smoking and gained 10lbs?!

Question: I was trying to lose weight because since I started my desk job I've gained probably 20 lbs...
I was at 174 and had gotten down to 169.5
and I decided that while I'm trying to get healthy, I should also quit smoking...

BAD IDEA!! Now I'm up to 180.5!! (I'm 5'8", 19 years old & female)

I plan on working out and dieting, and I also purchased Hydroxycut, but before I get into taking it, I was wondering if anyone has any stories about it, or any other suggestions??

Is there anything a doctor can prescribe me?

CONGRATS on quiting smoking. That is probably the healthiest thing you have done by far. Please do not start smoking again.

I quit 10 years ago, and to have gained weight. At my leanest time I was 6' tall and 176lbs, now I am 228. I was 240 a month or so again.

Working behind a desk does take its toll on your body and getting heavier sneaks up on you. No Diet pill will ever work, if you first dont watch what you eat, and start exercising.

eat smaller portions, eat several small meals during the day, DONT skip breakfast. Eat more soups, and watery foods. And above all exersise.

Remember those 15 min smoke breaks you used to take? well go out side and walk down the road, and back, use up those 15 minutes walking. DO NOT LIGHT UP A CIGARRETE EITER!

do you watch TV? Yes? did you know there are 20 minutes of commercials during an hour long show? take those 20 minutes and stretch, do some resistance exersices, jump rope, do sit ups. Instead of getting up and getting a soda, jump up, run in place, and get a glass of Green Tea.
Green Tea is said to help with High-blood presure, and help speed up the bodies fat burning.

Do have a doctor check you out to make sure you can do exersices, or have him/her tell you what exersise you would be comfortable doing. Whatever you do do not start a FAD diet, just eat right, trim the fat, reduce the portions, and exersice.

I have started bowling, and spending time at the YMCA exersising, there are so many people at the Y that are willing to help you loose weight, plus its fun, and socializing is healthy too.

Good Luck

Smoking causes your appetite to be controlled and people generally gain weight when they quit due to the cravings that nictotine produce. Don't eat when you feel cravings. It wasn't a bad idea to quit smoking, that's actually better that you quit and gained a little than keep smoking and still be obese. You just need to get past "the hump" It will get easier as time goes on.

just make sure you dont start back smoking again

my aunt took hydroxycut. lost some reasonable weight, and gained some of it back when she stopped and she stayed to her workout

p.s. good for quitting smoking, the reason you gained weight is smoking helps burn calories, but it also gives you cancer

just do your regular workout

Congratulations on quitting!!!!!

But please don't replace cigaratte chemicals with nasty diet pill chemicals! Give your body some time to adjust. Definantely start excercising and eating healthy foods. You'll lose that weight and you are going to feel soooo good in a few months!

I don't know personally about Hydroxycut, but, from what I've heard on diet pills in general, they are a bad idea.
While at the time you are taking them, they may help a little, when you quit them, your metabolism will be so messed up that you'll then begin to gain weight. Also, almost all diet pills say they only work when combined with a healthy diet and exercise and...honestly, if you can do that, do you even need the pills?

If I were you (which, I am a shorter, heavier version), I'd work out and eat less (which shouldn't be hard considering that since I've been exercising, my appetite has decreased). I've lost 20 pounds by exercising, it has taken five months to do so, but I'm less likely to gain it back, I've not had to watch my food intake, and I feel healthier and happier overall.

I'm not sure on the name of the prescription, but I have a friend that's lost a lot of weight on something prescribed by a doctor, but it's a LIFELONG treatment. Even after being done with the actual pills and losing all the weight she wanted to, she has to constantly take other pills prescribed. That's not a way I'd want to live...

You make good suggestions, but but I quit about 7 weeks ago, and find that I still regularly go nuts for a smoke, and the easiest solution is to chomp comfort food. However, I have found out that immediately sucking one Commit [or generic type] nicotine lozenge takes away both urges. Commit isn't cheap, but I'm now down to one lozenge/day. They're non-prescription, and a generic version is available at WalMart. BTW- that 'cherry-flavored' is almost nil. Both mint & cherry flavors are OK but pretty weak.
