You could do a hard 20 minutes or a more moderate 40 minutes. Personally I like to do about 45-60 minutes of intervals. You can do them with any machine.

1 minute jog
2 minutes brisk walk
keep repeating this cycle

or 30 second sprints
1 1/2 minute brisk walk

Also, it's good to change things up: do 15 minutes on the treadmill, 15 on the elliptical, 15 on the bike.

Don't forget to warm up, cool down and stretch.

It's also a good idea to include strength training at least 3 days a week.

If you just had a baby, then your body has already been through a tremendous amount of stress. I'd start out with 20 minute regimens. Then after one or two weeks, once your body gets used to the exercise, you can start doing 30 minute regimens.

If you have a Gym membership you should have advice form a fitness instructor at the gym you are attending.
Get them to write you a program that is right for you.

30 minutes a day is the minimum recommended for cardiovascular health. It really isn't enough to have a significant impact on your weight.

You can lose weight with any combination of exercise and calorie restriction.

Do more exercise, you don't have to cut back on food quite as much.

Do less exercise, you have to be more careful with food intake.

It all depends on how much time and effort you can put into your exercise program, and how easy or difficult it is for you to say no to food.

I lean towards exercise to the tune of two or more hours a day because I have difficulty putting the fork down. But that's me.
