Look up a a basal metabolic rate calculator, this will tell you what your body burns just being alive. Any added exercise will cause you to burn more calories, and thus by seeing where you are at for your : age, weight, height and Gender. You will know what your caloric goals are for the day, just to maintain where you are at(stay the same weight).
If you wish to lose weight, then either adjust your food intake, exercise amount or both.
Be forewarned, if you create too big of a difference, your body will go into "starvation mode" and your metabolism slows down/ starts directing all incoming calories towards fat storage.
Good luck
Hope this helped

Like it means that you should eat smaller portions (but not under 1000 calories), and make it healthy foods. And then excersise. That's it.

You burn about 1,200 calories if you were to sleep all day. So if you lied in bed, and ate 1,200 calories, you would not gain any weight. Now, you burn even more going to school/work, ect. So if you burned 500 calories on a treadmill, you would lose a pound a week.
