Is it too late to workout at the age of 37 ??!

Question: I'm 37 yrs old, nearly 38....I'm quitting smoking tonight and want to start exercising and working out, at home, to help get my health back to normal, and to keep my mind of ciggies....also because its a great way to keep fit.

Only thing worrying me is my age...I don't have time to go to the gym, and we have no room in our flat for exercise equipment....but I bought one of those dance aerobics workout dvd's....is it dangerous at my age????? I feel fine, ( despite the shortness of breath when taking walks etc due to the smoking), but as I'm quitting tonight I was planning to start doing half hour walks everyday....then build it up to an hour...and then once I've built up my strength I was going to try that dance aerobics workout dvd.....am I on the right path? Or am I going about it all wrong?

First, let me say...get that, "is it to late to workout at age 37" out of your thoughts....it's never too late to start...if you know you're healthy enough and have either had a recent physical or are not physically disabled to the point you can't do any physical activity you can start anytime....You start up plan is OK and will likely work for you...try to set a goal of what you'd like to loose or look like by a certain time and work for that look at that point in time. Don't rush it....change takes time...the biggest hurdle is getting started, then sticking with it.....Other words we don't use are: hopeless, can't, or any number of phrases that sound like excuses to not workout...Watch your diet a little closer, drink lots of water, for you, a gallon a day is not out of range. Don't think you only need to drink something when you're thirsty....drink it because the body needs and uses it...for many things...
When I started body building I picked a photo of a guy in a magazine ( and no...not the freaks in the muscle mags) and told my trainer I wanted to look as close to that as I could....nine weeks later I looked so close I enter my first show....took second place.....I'm still doing it now after 15 years....for me...it's for life...it was a life style change that's a constant challenge... so on I go...Hook up with my e-mail and I'll see if I can send a picture of my first show....

you're doing fine so far- just stick to it, and eat healthier. drink lots of water! eat breakfast!

You are motivated and that is the best thing for you! Starting slow and building up is also important. I don't think it is ever too old to start an exercise plan or to quit smoking! Good for you!! I thought I would hate "Walk Away The Pounds" but the lady is actually very encouraging and not annoying like most fitness instructors. If you get cable, you might want to check out FitTV for 30 minute programs that are very varied so you can pick out things you enjoy without having to buy a new DVD. The Biggest Loser DVD is good too but gets a little boring BUT it makes me sweat A LOT.

Good Luck!

Well, if you feel you have reason to worry I'd go see the DR first and get clearance before undertaking any exercise routine..

Good luck!

you're fine!

i've got news for you!! it's almost NEVER too late to work out! not only is it a great way to become fit and healthy, it helps prevent many problems you may encounter when becoming older and older!
that sounds like a good plan.. just make sure to stick to it! and yes, keep upping the amount as you become more in shape. congratulations on your decision to become healthier, by quitting smoking and excersising! it'll be a tremendous help. don't forget to eat healthy too!

Absolutely not. I did exactly the same thing at exactly the same age and I am still going strong 3 years on - and feel so much better for it.

Aerobics videos are fine for any age as long as you listen to your body and go easy on it. Know your limits! However, you might find you get into and stick to a routine if you participate as a group or do it with friends. It is so much easier to give up or drop the habit if you go it alone. So find some mates to do it with or sign up for some classes. That's your aerobics sorted.

As for anaerobic exercise, from my experience, I would advise you this:

-You don't need to sign up to a fancy gym or buy expensive gym equipment. When I couldn't use the gym at work, I simply used a couple of 5 litre water bottles for weights. I also bought ankle and wrist weights to get my limbs tuned into doing extra work. You can get some great exercise regimes off the internet or from mags like Men's Health. (They are good for women too!) Look for one which suits your profile.

-Start off nice n easy. Once you are into a pattern, make sure you give yourself at least a days rest in between gym sessions or alternate your muscle groups.

-Make sure you're getting plenty of protein. To help the body break it down better, L-Carnitine or taurine supplements help.

Good luck...

My uncle starts exercise when he was 50 years old and now he's 40 kilogram leaner. Currently, he jog a half an hour every morning, and did 6 kilometres each weekend (resting only at sunday). I don't think anyone is too late for an exercise. Good for you, and bad for your sneakers.

theres a guy in my gym hes 72 truth he started training at 67 he showed me a photo of himself at 65 he was 19 stone and he looked real ill now he is 14 stone ripped and fitter than me and does cover photos for maggazines theres hope for everyone in life wat ever the age

It's never too late to work out :) Age doesn't matter, You can start off working slow, building your stamina up and increasing your time at the gym! you will soon be as fit as anything! Good luck! :)

Yes you are on the right path and NO WAY are you too old. I'm 5 years older than you and started a new exercise routine at 40 - feel better than I've done in years. Just build it up slowly as you are planning. You will be amazed at how quickly you can do more & more - especially with giving up the cigs.
