How to help dad lose weight?!

Question: My dad is in his 60's & has gout & athritis in his feet and ankles.
He is on medication for high blood pressure & is desparate to lose weight (he is around 17 stone) so that he can exercise.
What exercise could he do (maybe swimming?) that won't put a lot of pressure on his feet/ankles, and also what kind of diet should he have to help it along?
any help really appreciated!

Diet is key. If he has gout keep him off the alcohol and red meat. as i take it he consumes a lot of these. A well balanced diet of pasta, veg, fish, chicken/turkey, and even deserts in light moderation coupled with exercise will see the weight come off at a natural and healthy level.

Exercise like swimming will help as you say. Also consider boxing with a heavy bag if he can stand ok. But I would start with the swimming and do this lightly and pick it up at a gentle pace. If he has high blood pressure and is heavy, you don't want too much stress on the body. it may be wise for him to speak to his doctor before hand.

But before you even start, your dad has to want to do this himself otherwise you are wasting your time. There is no point going swimming boxing etc if he is going to eat rubbish when you aren't there.

Good luck though.

put a laxative in his food

sex? kidding um swimming push ups? stuff like that?

Take him to the grm, or if you don't want to do that call him a fat cow fat cow fat cow.

I swear by Slimming World, it's brilliant. Have a look at their website or buy the magazine in the shops. It gives an example of a weeks menu.

Right now I am cooking Sin free chips! You can eat as many as you like!

do some of the biggest muscle strengthening exercises you can do to increase your metabolism, like squats, deadlifts, push ups, chin ups, stomach crunches, and eat spicy food.
all this will increase the rate at which your body breaks down fat to use for fuel. higher metabolism = more fat burned

step 2
cardio everyday
if you want it bad anough, dont be lazy. if youre lazy you wont lose the weight.
1 hour every single day while doing the exercises 3-4 times per week, each time working until your muscles are too sore to do more.
you could box or bike instead of jog, but when biking you have to always be peddling, not coasting. running up and down stairs is great too. get your heart rate up, and get sweaty. dont eat fatty junky crap foods that come out of a box.
no KD, mcdonald, chips, chocolate bars, none of that poison. thats what it is, poison. those fats get stuck in your intestines and never come out. some people have 10 pounds of built up crud from eating chips stuck in their colon
take psyllium husk with water daily.
get it at a healthfood store, its godly
eat lots of fruit

do all of that and go hard and dont skip days, and the weight will melt off of you like a snowman in mexico

id really recommend the boxing, just wear pads on your hands and get your dad to take shots at you, and keep him moving quickly to get the heart rate up

Swimming would work pretty well. Also, a stationary bike. I'm told that's pretty easy on the joints since there is no pressure on the knees and such. As well as different mat exercises that he can do to lose weight on his stomach.

take him for gentle walks, not too far that his legs will hurt but just enogh for him to get excersice, also get him to stay on the right diet and he should be happy and healthy in no time, (smile)

Ask him to take walks or go swim with you. Add fruits and vegetables to meals.Try the diet meals to limit intake of calories. Good Luck. :)

Swimming and treadmilling is probably the best in this situation. This will help boost his heart rate and through time when he starts to lose weight and gets adjusted to his exercises he can start to progress onto more physical demandind type exercises, such as jogging and pushups. For meals, start dealing with the four food groups. a healthly fruit and vegatable intake is the best. Also going with a good vitamin regime with the diet is good too. Remember your also changing his eating habits too! Oh and lose the soda pop, sweets, and carbonated drinks too! drinking alot of water (8 glasses a day) or if you go with tea make sure you pick the organic type (cause many teas are so commercialized that they start to add so many additives). Hey also get input from your doctor. It'll always helps. hey its great that you're watching after your father its nice to know. Good luck with yourself and take care. God Bless!

I think swimming is probably the best form of exercise he can do if he has problems with his feet... The only other thing I can think of is a stationary bike that he could use when his feet aren't hurting him too badly.

There are also many lovely low fat recipes online.

Weight loss is a tricky topic. Lots of people are unhappy with their present weight, but most aren't sure how to

change it - and many would be better off staying where they are. You may want to look like the models or actors in

magazines and on TV, but those goals might not be healthy or realistic for you. Besides, no magical diet or pill will

make you look like someone else.

So what should you do about weight control?
