The thing with walking that makes most people believe it is overrated or not working is the impact of the walking. If you are in fairly decent shape you can't just go out and walk around at a normal pace for an hour and expect the pounds to shed off. The key is your heart rate! You have to be walking fast enough so that your heart rate gets going and therefore your metabolism will kick in, and your system will start using the fat you have stored to replenish itself. Walking is wonderful for you and it is VERY VERY helpful if done correctly. The problem is that most people do not push themselves while walking. Once again the key is the heart rate. If you walk for an hour and your aren't sweating or breathing heavier...you didnt walk quickly enough to raise your heart rate.

mee...i agree

its always fat people who go for walks coz theyre convinced its helping but really they cant be bothered to do a proper workout or something so they stay fat...

Walking is alright if you do a lot of it, but there are so many more exercises that burn more calories in less time. If you're going to walk, you might as well jog.

Well it depends. Not every exercise is equally good for everyone. If you're a healthy but slightly overweight 20 year old person, you should aim for a more strenuous workout. Benefits of walking are grossly exaggerated for you because it will essentially do nothing. You need to be sweating and your heart rate needs to go up. But see my mom is 70 and she has heart problems. She would definitely benefit from walking. In fact, this is what her doctor told her. She's supposed to walk 2 miles every day at a moderate pace.
