Does fibre really speed up you're bowel system?!

Question: Do foods high in fiber really speed up the bowel system just as much as spoon of pro laxative would. Figs and Prunes seem to do the job more than laxative's such as califig. What works most for you? lmao gross question I no but just be mature, we are adults/young adults not kids :-) soo yeahh thanks for the replies I get to this question.

?KENDRA?, it's important to distinguish here between the laxative effects of fiber and the bulking characteristics of fiber.

Fibers that are higher in soluble fiber will have a laxative effect. That means they draw water out of the intestines and loosen bowel movements, essentially making them "softer" because they have a higher water content. They also contain compounds that create a "coating" of sorts that allows the feces (god, this is really graphic, I'm realizing) to move more easily through your colon. In essence, soluble fiber lubricates the waste as it passes through your system. Good sources of soluble fiber include oatmeal, psyllium (Metamucil) and flaxseed (which has a compound that is mildly laxative beyond the fiber.)

Non-soluble fiber, on the other hand, tends to have a bulking effect. It also draws water, but it primarily adds material to the digestive process that can't be broken down by the body (in the form of non-digestable cellulose). So the body has to pass it. Examples of non-soluble fiber include whole wheat, wheat bran and many vegetable fibers.

Fiber doesn't really speed up your digestive system. That's a myth. The speed of your digestive system is dependent on the volume of foods you eat. What your body can't utilize or digest gets moved through your bowel system. For example, high protein diets will result in less bowel movements (and they will be "firmer" which can irritate things), but they aren't necessarily "slower" than when you eat high-fiber foods. You still have to pass waste material, it's just that you have less "undigestable" matter to deal with. So you're body passes it less frequently.

Fiber enourages regular bowel movements because it creates more material that cannot be fully digested and thus, must be passed. Eating a mix of soluable and non-soluable fiber encourages both bulking and softening of the stool -- which is critical to offset the additional bulk that comes along with the stuff that can't be digested.

"Speed" of your bowel system is really relative here. Again, the more undigestable material, the more you have to go. It's just a function of your diet and your body's adaptation to what you consume.

That said, there is a fairly substantial body of research that suggests that high-fiber diets (especially diets high soluable fiber from things like oats) can reduce cholesterol, as well as heart disease, high-blood pressure, stroke and even certain forms of cancer. So there are plenty of reasons to include a mix of these fibers in your diet.

Best of luck!

yes

so how bout them pats

Oh yea!

yes they do

yes it does, have your weetabix x

Yes, it does. I don't know what works mostly for myself. xD

yes they do. it's because your stomach can not process the plant-like material so it's forced to 'spit it out.'

yes it does

Yes, fiber is supposed to help loosen your bowel movements. Believe me it works.

naw, thats just a joke that fiber helps keep you regular

Tell you what - eat a big bowl of fiber one cereal or two good size bran muffins and see how long it takes to go thru!
(maybe 20 -30 minutes!)

fiber is good for the body, don't do laxatives, they trick your muscles and over time, do lots of harm. People get addicted to them. Eat lots of fiber and drink lots of water and you'll be fine.

yes ma'am I worked as a toddler teacher in high school and when the kids had Bran muffins in the morning it always got their bowels moving!

ya fiber helps but then again ex lax works best but i recomend all natural things

Oh boy, do they. Dried fruits & nuts especially will clean you right out.

Wow Kendra, It sure does, but not as much as those tight pants.

fiber will help you because it cleans you out. roughage is always good. (lettuce, any green leafy vegetables, fruits, grains..)

yes! it's best to use natural things like figs and proons, avoid laxitives unless you really need them. NATURAL IS ALWAYS THE WAY TO GO!

haha... it is a gross question, but i'm glad you asked, someone needed too! and i mean it's natural... so it shouldnt be gross! lmao!

Yes, and it keeps it clean too. Prunes are natures laxative.

there are these 500 mg magnesium pills that i found keeps me regualr. i just take one when i need one or every night. sounds weird or whatever but it works for me. and yes fiber does help and prunes do to.

Fibre rich foods are easier for the body to digest.

Instead of laxatives, try getting some natural fibre products. In Aust you can get metamucil, or a stronger thing called Normacol - works an absolute treat!

This is a crappy question!
It is a natural way to add BULK, and thus it makes for a healthier emptying of the bowels. It is much easier on the system than laxatives, and your body works the way it was inteded to work. Laxatives can cause you to become depenent on their use.

It does not speed things up as a laxative does, it does render the movement of material through the bowels more efficient in relation to intestinal contractions.

So it only appears to be speeding things up.

Fiber is much safer than laxatives.

Prunes are excellent and contain some fiber.

Some laxatives are very irritating and pose a real hazard to your health with continuing use.

Yes, fiber does. The fiber is not easily absorbed by the gut, so most of it flushes on through. A high fiber diet can actually help prevent some colon problems. Fresh fruits are also a good source of fiber.

no it keeps you regular and keeps you from gettin' the runs! lol

Yes, increasing dietary fiber can help to "speed up" bowels. Fiber makes it easier for your bowels to pass stuff through.

Eating high fiber foods is better than taking all the fiber additives. Cleans out the pipes. Nothing better than an all natural bowl of Colon Blow cereal every morning!
