Why do overweight people think protein will help them lose weight?!


Question: I personally take and have been taking several supplements for 15+ years. I am a bodybuilder so I have a reason to get the extra protein. I see many questions from people that have no idea what a "diet" is asking about protein; whey protein in particular. Why do these people think they protein is going to be the end all supplement for a healthy life? From what I see, few people actually need the extra protein. People who push themselves to their bodies' limit and vegans may need it, but why the rush of people this year?

Good observation and right on with your conclusions. Lot to do with the hyped up ads for protein supplements. The magic potion.

because it fills you up so you dont have to eat alot.

when someone wants to lose weight, it they eat low calorie and high protein their body is less likely to eat the muscle..but if they eat no protien and low calories..their body will eat muscle and some fat

well most people dont get enough protien, and protien helps build muscle wich burns fat, thus resulting in weight loss

protein will fill you up, making it so youre not going to snack off schedual of your 3 main meals

also.. protien builds muscle and muscle burns fat... so while youre exercising, youre burning your normal fat and muscle will increase the speed of the fat being burned and the quanitity of fat... if i have big arm muscles, my arm fat will burn quicker than somewhere else that doesnt have a lot of muscle, while im exercising.

no oprah did not recommend it. It probably goes back to the low or no carb diets they stress protien and fats.

Protein has good carbs and will make you feel full, chips don't.

A lot of people think there is an instant cure for fat, there isn't the sad truth is that you have to get off your *** to lose weight and gain muscle.

if your a body builder you should personally know that protein is a good way to lose weight, it doesn't have to be in a supplement, chicken baked is a good source of protein, and no Oprah is saying go for the green tea.

People of all sizes need protein, and fewer refined carbs. If they replace junk starches with some protein, they can lose weight.

Taking a diet high in protein results in the body releasing glucagon. That's the hormone that tells the body to release body fat to be used for energy. With exercise it makes fat loss easier and faster. There are several diets, some new, that are high protein diets, and they usually come out this time of the year.

there are 3 main sources of fuel for you body: carbohydrate, fat and protein. The body uses dietary fat and carbohydrates quite easily but does not use dietary protein as easily (as protein is processed into muscle more readily than into fat cells).

So by increasing protein intake while simultaneously decreasing fat and carbohydrate, it forces the body to use its fat stores for energy.

Having said that you can argue that a "normal healthy diet" is all you need, but for some people it obviously jusy doesn't work or is too hard therefore people have gone looking for others options. High protein can be done in a healthy way as long as there is enough greenery and fresh ;leafies in the diet to provide fibre and chlorphyll.

Well it could be that most over weight people eat a bunch of junk and even being seditary you still need a certain amount of protein. Most overweight people fill up on processed foods that have very little nutrition so their bodies are mostly mush.

If they cant even build muscle then they will get discouraged easily. Once they start working out then they need to increase their protein and eat complex carbs as well, veggies, and seeds. Malnutrition in over weight is so great that they need to start somewhere. But I dont think they think that is the "end all"....its the beginning. And taking several suppliments is not the way for all people to go.

When is the last time you helped someone get into shape?

I know that when I was over weight it was mostly from binge eatting one time a day... processed food. I was only eatting about 2-5 grams a of protein.

Wow, you speak for fat people everywhere...I guess they all think the same way...What if some fat people know this information but they just have trouble implementing it?

First, you don't have reason for eating extra protein. Unless takig steroids, it's another myth that body builders need more protein than the average guy already eats. Industry convinces body builders they need more proetein, despite the fact that extra protein is hard on your kidneys and keeps nitrogen levels higher than what is healthiest.

So the answer to your question is that industry, using advertising forms of propaganda, convinces people they need things they really don't to create, maintain, and increase corporate profits.
