Any tips for beginners to jogging?!

Question: Feeling really stressed at the moment, I'm a third year undergraduate and I thought a bit of jogging would vent some of this tension.

Im completely new to jogging. I usually go on the exercise bike once a week, so any tips on hows far I should run, pace, how long I should run for etc

When I've got into training in the past I am usually a fit healthy individual, but Ive got out of shape so best assume I have minimum fitness.

I started jogging about 2 years ago. At first I was dire - I could barely manage to jog along, I was out of breathe, practically purple (!) but I went about it the wrong way, I just flung myself into it headfirst.

The way to go about it is to start off slow, jog at a slow pace for a few minutes, then brisk walk for few minutes, the jog again. After doing this for a few sessions, you'll be able to cut the walking times so before long you are just jogging.

Once you've got your jogging style - everyone runs differently, some are nodders, others do the weirdest things with their arms - you can then improve your speed. Again, do it gradually.

It took me a week before I noticed a difference as I timed my runs. After a fortnight I was noticing a real difference and after a month, the run that took me 45minutes was taking me 25.

Make sure you've got yourself a good, proper pair of jogging shoes.
The first sign of any injury, stop and rest - don't carry on or you'll end up much worse.
Run in busy places, don't go running through an empty park in the evening.
Running on the street? Wear reflective arm bands.
Don't wear anything that rubs - I've ended up in agony with seams on shorts/underarms that rub like murder after a while.
I never listen to my iPod when jogging, I want to stay alert on all whats going on around me.

Jogging is the best way to get fit and is the best way to get fit fast - you come along in leaps and bounds so much quicker than using gym equipment.

Have fun!

good running shoes, comfy clothes and just take it easy til you get more use to it.

Hahaha.. take water bottle with you so tht you dont get thirst ..

make sure you stretch properly before and after. just take it at a pace you feel comfortable with. its not a race

do you know the guy who started the jogging craze died of a heart attack while out jogging its better to go on your bike 3/4 times a week

jogging is a great way to vent stress

the only thing you need to do is get some running shoes and you're ready

good running shoes can help, because most people have a naturally flawed stride. for example, if you pronate, this means that each step, the inside of your foot hits the grounds first. snooponate (sp?) is when the outside of your foot makes contact with the ground first. then some ppl heel strike, which is when they um heel strike.

a good running shoe can correct almost all of this. decent running shoe stores have a podiatrist (foot doctor (sp?)) on hand that can help you pick out a good shoe.

but then again, you can just wear watever you got and go jogging. i was very overweight but now i'm fit because of all the cardio i did. in the beginning i could barely get around the block. i had to walk half of it. but you just keep at it every day, and you start to really see improvement which is so exciting

anyway, have fun

go easy, its bad for the knees, joints.
depends how much you do.

I am also jogging and running, I started to do it about 5 years ago and it's the best way to be in shape in any way. I suggest you will need to fine the good running shoes ( very important ), with bad shoes you can have problems with you legs, back and etc. Then you need to make a plan for your workout - decide how many times a week you want to exercise ( the best is 4 - 5 times per week). Decide on distance as well , but for the first week take it easy and start from 2 to 3 km ( or 15 to 20 min jogging) at easy peace, if it will be to difficult for you to jogg this distance ( or time) non stop you can combine jogging with fast walking ( for instance - 500 m jogging 300 m walking). Next week you can increase distance a little bit or time ( + 5 min to your longest run ). Do not eat just beforee you go to run, eat something light and small (like fruits, fat-low yogurt) 1 - 2 hours befor running.

Good luck !
