You have misunderstood the relationship between bodyweight, fat storage and food.

This misunderstanding is very common, and it is encouraged by the slimming industry in order to sell products and clubs.

There are no 'magic' foods that will affect your weight. Starchy foods are NOT 'fattening'; nor are any other kinds of food.

It is true to say that 'you are what you eat', but it is just as important to realise that 'you (and your appetite) are SHAPED by what you DO'.

Working out a lot will usually cause weight loss; this technique is used by anorexics in order to 'burn off calories'.

Your boyfriend will gain weight if he does short bouts of heavy, exhausting exercise. He will also gain weight if he sits still and / or sleeps all the time. The first option will build muscle, and the exercise will make him hungry so that he takes in more energy and protein. The second will make him store fat, even though his appetite will be reduced.

Bodybuilders spend a lot of time working out when they are 'cutting down' bodyfat (and dehydrating their skin) in preparation for a competition.

When extra muscle mass is wanted, the 'right' kind of workout is VERY heavy and VERY short, with plenty of 'recovery time' between sets and between sessions. The weights need to be so heavy that the movement CANNOT be completed more than ten times. (Sometimes, 'failure' sets of only 3 repetitions are recommended)

For maximum mass gains, he should be working so heavy that he aches for three days after the workout. No training should be done on 'aching days'; the muscles are more vulnerable to injury during this time.

This technique needs to be used carefully. Too much 'heavy' work can cause injuries, even if the 'ache OR work' rule is followed. Noticeable weight gain is achievable at workout intensities that only make you ache for one day.

A useful (occasional) variation is to work one bodypart only during the session, doing a large number of short sets-to-failure, with long (up to fifteen minutes) rests in between to allow the muscles to regain some strength.

Eating correctly is important for weight gain, but the 'right' foods will not trigger growth on their own. Doing the 'right' work will alter the appetite, and encourage him to eat the appropriate amount & type of food.

He is naturally a light person and by stopping weight training he has lost muscle, thus losing weight.

Regular eating, plenty of calories, short weight training session using compound movements (ask at gym)

(while holidaying in the USA from Australia I stopped doing weights and ate junk for 2 months. I came home 10 pounds lighter)

full english breakfast with bread & butter is good.drinking lots of guiness helps!

Get him to record down a typical days eating habits....with the calories he is taking in. Its hard but its worth it as when you have the amount of calories he usually eats per day you then make sure that he starts eating more than the typical amount. He may eat alot of fatty or sugarry foods however he still may not be eating enough calories. If this doesnt work i would suggest that he goes to the gym and onto the weights this will add muscle mass and make him look like hes weighs more but make sure he has a protein shake after he works out to make sure the muscle actually increases and he will weigh more.

my friends husband is the same, but he does do alot of exercise, and under from work stress at work . maybe he should go to the docs to check his thyroid gland as it could be over active, sorry can't give you many more suggestions,
one more thing he could just be eating the wrong kinds of foods, change of diet could be a good thing.
good luck
